What is MDPE?

MDPE covers polyethylene of 0.926–0.940 g/cm3 density (ASTM D1248 Type II), balancing LDPE flexibility with HDPE strength, with PE80 pipe, UV carbon-black, film, rotomoulding, injection, crosslinkable, FR and FDA grades on file. It is chosen for stress-crack and impact resistance, most commonly in gas distribution pipe, at 0.934 g/cm3, 19 MPa yield, 24 MPa tensile, 700% elongation and Shore D 58. Continuous service is limited to about 65 °C, stiffness is below HDPE, and the non-polar surface needs activation before printing or bonding. HDPE (PE100) is the alternative where a higher pressure rating or more rigidity is needed. MDPE has a density of 0.93 g/cm³ (0.0337 lb/in³), lighter than 78% of polymer grades. Its glass-transition temperature is -110°C (-166 °F). MDPE has a yield strength of 19 MPa (2.76 ksi) and a tensile strength of 24 MPa (3.48 ksi) — weaker than 81% of polymer grades. Elongation at break is 700% and the elastic modulus is 0.75 GPa (0.109 Msi).

Working with MDPE

Is MDPE easy to machine?

Machines easily but gummy and low-modulus — use sharp high-rake tools, high speed, low feed, coolant/air blast and generous fixturing to avoid part deflection and springback.

Can MDPE be welded?

Ideal for butt fusion, electrofusion, hot-plate, hot-gas and extrusion welding; joints reach near parent-material strength — adhesive bonding requires corona/flame or plasma pretreatment.

Can MDPE be formed, bent or molded?

Processes on standard PE screws at 180–240 °C melt with 20–60 °C tools; allow 1.5–3 % shrinkage with anisotropy, and thermoform or cold-bend sheet with allowance for large elastic recovery.
