What is PBSA?
PBSA is an adipate-modified poly(butylene succinate) copolymer in the bio-based polyester family, with lower crystallinity and far greater ductility than homopolymer PBS. Engineers use it where soft, tough biodegradable film or sheet is required and as a toughening modifier for PLA; it is supplied as film and high-melt-flow pellets with PLA-blend, starch-filled, CaCO3-filled, UV and food conditions. Very low stiffness (0.2 GPa modulus, 22 MPa tensile, 750 % elongation, Shore D 45) and a 55 °C service limit rule out structural parts, though sealing behaviour is excellent. PBS is the stiffer alternative. PBSA has a density of 1.24 g/cm³ (0.0448 lb/in³), heavier than 63% of polymer grades. Its glass-transition temperature is -43°C (-45 °F). PBSA has a yield strength of 13 MPa (1.89 ksi) and a tensile strength of 22 MPa (3.19 ksi) — weaker than 86% of polymer grades. Elongation at break is 700% and the elastic modulus is 0.22 GPa (0.0319 Msi).

Working with PBSA
Is PBSA easy to machine?
Machines poorly — very soft and rubbery; use sharp positive-rake tools, high speed, low feed and cooling air, or die-cut/laser-cut film instead.
Can PBSA be welded?
Excellent heat, impulse and ultrasonic sealing at 100–130 °C, well below other biopolymers; solvent bonding is not practical.
Can PBSA be formed, bent or molded?
Dry pellets to <0.03 % moisture, keep melt 140–185 °C to avoid hydrolytic and thermal degradation; slow crystallisation demands cool moulds, long chill rolls and anti-block for film.

What surface finishes work on PBSA?
Surface treats readily by corona for flexo printing and water-based inks; avoid hot-water or alkaline cleaning which hydrolyses the surface.
How much does PBSA cost?
PBSA is a standard-cost polymer ($$), cheaper than about 71% of the materials FabDigit quotes. Part price depends far more on geometry, tolerance and quantity than on the raw stock — upload a CAD file for a live quote.
