What is MP35N?
MP35N (UNS R30035) is a cobalt-nickel-chromium-molybdenum multiphase alloy strengthened by cold work plus aging, combining extremely high strength with excellent corrosion resistance. It is bought as bar, wire and strip for aerospace fasteners, springs and implantable devices. In the cold-worked and aged condition it reaches 1790 MPa yield, 1930 MPa tensile, 10 % elongation and 50 HRC, with service to about 425 °C. Machinability (12), weldability (25) and formability (10) are all poor and cost is high; Alloy 718 is the usual lower-cost substitute where the corrosion requirement allows. MP35N has a density of 8.43 g/cm³ (0.305 lb/in³), heavier than 59% of nickel alloy grades. It melts at 1,315°C (2,399 °F). MP35N has a yield strength of 1,790 MPa (260 ksi) and a tensile strength of 1,930 MPa (280 ksi) — stronger than 100% of nickel alloy grades. Elongation at break is 10% and the elastic modulus is 233 GPa (33.8 Msi).

Working with MP35N
Is MP35N easy to machine?
Very difficult — extreme work hardening and low thermal conductivity; use rigid setups, positive-rake carbide or ceramic tooling, heavy positive feed with no dwell, low surface speed and copious high-pressure coolant.
Can MP35N be welded?
GTAW/plasma/EB/laser welding is feasible in the annealed condition with matching filler; welding after cold work and aging destroys the strengthening in the HAZ and is generally avoided.
Can MP35N be formed, bent or molded?
Excellent cold formability when annealed (drawing, coiling, heading with interstage anneals); in the cold-worked + aged condition it is essentially unformable, so all bending must precede aging.
