Working with VT5L-HIP

Is VT5L easy to machine?

Run low speed with heavy feed, rigid clamping and copious high-pressure coolant, using sharp uncoated-carbide or PVD-coated tools. Keep depth of cut greater than the work-hardened layer left by the previous pass, and treat chips as flammable.

Can VT5L be welded?

The single-phase alpha structure has no hot-cracking tendency, so TIG, plasma and electron-beam welding, including casting weld repair, are practical. Maintain full inert-gas or vacuum shielding throughout, then stress-relief anneal at 750–800 °C.

Can VT5L be formed, bent or molded?

Normally vacuum skull-melted and poured into graphite, metal or investment moulds, including centrifugal casting; fluidity is better than that of two-phase titanium alloys. Use large risers for feeding and HIP the castings to close internal porosity.

What surface finishes work on VT5L?

After grit blasting, pickle in HNO3/HF to remove the oxygen-rich alpha case. Colour anodizing, micro-arc oxidation or sprayed coatings can follow; electroplating is generally not used.

VT5L-HIP — frequently asked

What is VT5L-HIP used for?

VT5L-HIP is typically used for pump housings, aerospace fittings and chemical equipment castings. In short: good-flowing alpha cast titanium; no hot-cracking tendency; weldable general-purpose castings.

What is the yield strength of VT5L-HIP?

VT5L-HIP has a typical yield strength of 655 MPa (95 ksi) and a tensile strength of 770 MPa (112 ksi) — stronger than 52% of titanium grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 4 listed tempers.

Is VT5L-HIP easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated poor (23/100, worse than 52% of titanium grades). Run low speed with heavy feed, rigid clamping and copious high-pressure coolant, using sharp uncoated-carbide or PVD-coated tools. Keep depth of cut greater than the work-hardened layer left by the previous pass, and treat chips as flammable.

Can VT5L-HIP be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated very good (80/100). The single-phase alpha structure has no hot-cracking tendency, so TIG, plasma and electron-beam welding, including casting weld repair, are practical. Maintain full inert-gas or vacuum shielding throughout, then stress-relief anneal at 750–800 °C.

What surface finishes work on VT5L-HIP?

After grit blasting, pickle in HNO3/HF to remove the oxygen-rich alpha case. Colour anodizing, micro-arc oxidation or sprayed coatings can follow; electroplating is generally not used.

Can VT5L-HIP be formed, bent or molded?

Normally vacuum skull-melted and poured into graphite, metal or investment moulds, including centrifugal casting; fluidity is better than that of two-phase titanium alloys. Use large risers for feeding and HIP the castings to close internal porosity.

What is the maximum service temperature of VT5L-HIP?

VT5L-HIP is rated for continuous use to about 400°C (752 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between VT5L-F and VT5L-ANN?

F is the default condition — default delivery state: vacuum skull-melted graphite-mould or investment castings that are only cleaned, for complex, moderately loaded housings, pumps and valve bodies at 650 MPa yield. ANN: pick when casting and weld-repair residual stress must be removed and dimensions stabilised: a 750–800 °C air-cooled anneal trades yield down to 620 MPa for 10 % elongation and more toughness. Yield strength is 650 MPa in F versus 620 MPa in ANN.
