Working with SUP7-N

Is SUP7 easy to machine?

Machine in the annealed condition (≈230 HB) with sharp carbide tooling; at 45+ HRC only grinding, hard turning with CBN or EDM are practical.

Can SUP7 be welded?

Essentially not weldable in service condition (CE ≈ 0.9–1.0); if unavoidable use low-hydrogen consumables, 300–400 °C preheat and immediate full re-quench-and-temper.

Can SUP7 be formed, bent or molded?

Hot form leaf/coil springs at 850–950 °C, or cold coil in the annealed/cold-drawn state then oil quench 830–860 °C and temper 420–560 °C; protect against decarburization in a controlled atmosphere.

What surface finishes work on SUP7?

Shot peen after tempering for fatigue life, then phosphate + epoxy/powder coat or zinc-flake; avoid acid pickling and electroplating without a post-plating hydrogen bake.

SUP7-N — frequently asked

What is SUP7-N used for?

SUP7-N is typically used for automotive coil springs, leaf springs, truck and trailer suspension springs, agricultural and off-highway machinery springs, heavy spring washers and clips and spring plates and brackets. In short: high-silicon spring steel; AISI 9260 equivalent; economical leaf-spring grade.

What is the yield strength of SUP7-N?

SUP7-N has a typical yield strength of 610 MPa (88.5 ksi) and a tensile strength of 1,000 MPa (145 ksi) — stronger than 77% of steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 8 listed tempers.

Is SUP7-N easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated poor (30/100, worse than 89% of steel grades). Machine in the annealed condition (≈230 HB) with sharp carbide tooling; at 45+ HRC only grinding, hard turning with CBN or EDM are practical.

Can SUP7-N be welded?

Not readily — weldability is rated poor (25/100). Essentially not weldable in service condition (CE ≈ 0.9–1.0); if unavoidable use low-hydrogen consumables, 300–400 °C preheat and immediate full re-quench-and-temper.

What surface finishes work on SUP7-N?

Shot peen after tempering for fatigue life, then phosphate + epoxy/powder coat or zinc-flake; avoid acid pickling and electroplating without a post-plating hydrogen bake.

Can SUP7-N be formed, bent or molded?

Hot form leaf/coil springs at 850–950 °C, or cold coil in the annealed/cold-drawn state then oil quench 830–860 °C and temper 420–560 °C; protect against decarburization in a controlled atmosphere.

What is the maximum service temperature of SUP7-N?

SUP7-N is rated for continuous use to about 400°C (752 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between SUP7-QT and SUP7-A?

QT is the default condition — standard delivered spring condition — best balance of elastic limit, fatigue life and sag resistance. A: softest condition for machining, cold forming and cold coiling before quench-and-temper. Yield strength is 1,370 MPa in QT versus 450 MPa in A.
