Steel SUP7-CD vs SUP7-N

Steel · SUP7 temper comparison

SUP7-CD and SUP7-N are two conditions of the same steel grade, SUP7: CD (cold drawn) versus N (normalized). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. SUP7-CD is the stronger of the two: yield strength 720 MPa (104 ksi) against 610 MPa (88.5 ksi) for SUP7-N, about 18% more. In exchange, SUP7-N is the more ductile: elongation 13% versus 10% for SUP7-CD, and SUP7-N is harder (300 HB vs 265 HB). SUP7-N runs hotter in service (400°C vs 300°C continuous). On the shop floor, SUP7-CD machines more easily (fair vs poor).

SUP7-CDChoose it when strength drives the design, or when the part is machined in volume.

SUP7-NChoose it when the part is bent, formed or impact-loaded, or when the part sees heat.

SUP7-CD vs SUP7-N — frequently asked

Is SUP7-CD stronger than SUP7-N?

Yes. SUP7-CD has a typical yield strength of 720 MPa (104 ksi) against 610 MPa (88.5 ksi) for SUP7-N — about 18% more. Tensile strength is 900 MPa (131 ksi) vs 1,000 MPa (145 ksi).

Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, CD or N?

QT is the default SUP7 condition in the FabDigit quote flow (neither CD nor N). The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.

Which is easier to machine, SUP7-CD or SUP7-N?

SUP7-CD. Its machinability rates fair (40/100) against poor (30/100) for SUP7-N; for welding the order is SUP7-N first (poor, 25/100) then SUP7-CD (poor, 18/100).

Upload a CAD file and FabDigit prices the part in SUP7-CD and SUP7-N side by side — material, machining time, tolerance and finish in one quote. Certified material data ships with the order on request.

Typical handbook values for the conditions named above, normalised for comparison. Hardness on non-Brinell scales is converted approximately for charting only. Request certified data with your order for design-critical properties.
