Working with A7-ANN

Is A7 easy to machine?

Machine only in the annealed state and expect roughly a fifth of 1212 speeds — use rigid setups, sharp carbide or CBN, low feeds; hardened A7 is a grind/EDM-only material and needs CBN or SG-alumina wheels because of the vanadium carbides.

Can A7 be welded?

Avoid structural welding; for repair only, preheat 400–480 °C, use matched high-alloy tool-steel filler, keep interpass hot and temper immediately below the last tempering temperature.

Can A7 be formed, bent or molded?

Hot work at 1040–900 °C with slow furnace cooling; essentially no cold forming — annealed A7 has too little ductility and hardened A7 none at all.

What surface finishes work on A7?

Not anodizable; protect with oil, black oxide, phosphate or PVD (TiN/AlCrN); polishing is limited by coarse primary carbides, so aim for fine ground/lapped rather than mirror finishes.

A7-ANN — frequently asked

What is A7-ANN used for?

A7-ANN is typically used for highly abrasive blanking dies, wear plates, extrusion dies for abrasive materials and forming rolls. In short: most abrasion-resistant A-grade; low toughness, high carbide; grind or EDM only hardened.

What is the yield strength of A7-ANN?

A7-ANN has a typical yield strength of 500 MPa (72.5 ksi) and a tensile strength of 830 MPa (120 ksi) — stronger than 63% of steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 6 listed tempers.

Is A7-ANN easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated poor (18/100, worse than 97% of steel grades). Machine only in the annealed state and expect roughly a fifth of 1212 speeds — use rigid setups, sharp carbide or CBN, low feeds; hardened A7 is a grind/EDM-only material and needs CBN or SG-alumina wheels because of the vanadium carbides.

Can A7-ANN be welded?

Not readily — weldability is rated not recommended (12/100). Avoid structural welding; for repair only, preheat 400–480 °C, use matched high-alloy tool-steel filler, keep interpass hot and temper immediately below the last tempering temperature.

What surface finishes work on A7-ANN?

Not anodizable; protect with oil, black oxide, phosphate or PVD (TiN/AlCrN); polishing is limited by coarse primary carbides, so aim for fine ground/lapped rather than mirror finishes.

Can A7-ANN be formed, bent or molded?

Hot work at 1040–900 °C with slow furnace cooling; essentially no cold forming — annealed A7 has too little ductility and hardened A7 none at all.

What is the maximum service temperature of A7-ANN?

A7-ANN is rated for continuous use to about 400°C (752 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between A7-ANN and A7 HT62-65?

ANN is the default condition — standard mill supply condition (bar/plate) for rough machining before air hardening. HT62-65: air-quench from ~955–980 °C and low-temper (~175–200 °C) for the highest abrasion resistance; use only where impact is essentially absent. Yield strength is 500 MPa in ANN versus 2,000 MPa in HT62-65.
