Steel A7 vs O1

Steel · grade comparison

Steel A7 and O1 are both steel grades. A7 is the stronger of the two: yield strength 500 MPa (72.5 ksi) against 400 MPa (58 ksi) for O1, about 25% more; tensile strength follows at 830 MPa (120 ksi) vs 690 MPa (100 ksi). In exchange, O1 is the more ductile: elongation 25% versus 10% for A7, and A7 is harder (241 HB vs 200 HB). O1 conducts heat better (35 W/m·K vs 20 W/m·K). On the shop floor, O1 machines more easily (fair vs poor).

A7Choose it when strength drives the design.

O1Choose it when the part is bent, formed or impact-loaded, or when the part is machined in volume.

A7 vs O1 — frequently asked

Is A7 stronger than O1?

Yes. A7 has a typical yield strength of 500 MPa (72.5 ksi) against 400 MPa (58 ksi) for O1 — about 25% more. Tensile strength is 830 MPa (120 ksi) vs 690 MPa (100 ksi).

Which is cheaper, A7 or O1?

Both sit in the same relative cost tier ($$$$, high); the part price will be decided by machining time, tolerance and quantity rather than by the material.

Which is easier to machine, A7 or O1?

O1. Its machinability rates fair (45/100) against poor (18/100) for A7; for welding the order is O1 first (poor, 20/100) then A7 (not recommended, 12/100).
