Working with 70 CR-H

Is 70 easy to machine?

Machine in the annealed/spheroidized state (≈45–55 % of 1212) with sharp carbide or HSS tooling; above 45 HRC use grinding, EDM or CBN turning.

Can 70 be welded?

Effectively unweldable for structural joints — 0.7 %C gives brittle martensite; if unavoidable use 200–300 °C preheat, low-hydrogen consumables and immediate temper, and expect loss of spring temper in the HAZ.

Can 70 be formed, bent or molded?

Blank, bend and coil in the annealed or cold-rolled-hard state with generous bend radii along the grain; harden by oil quench from 800–830 °C then temper 380–480 °C, or stress relieve 200–300 °C for formed hard strip.

What surface finishes work on 70?

No corrosion resistance: specify oiling, phosphate + oil, black oxide, zinc or Zn-Ni plating (with 190–220 °C bake to avoid hydrogen embrittlement), or e-coat; shot peening markedly improves spring fatigue life.

70 CR-H — frequently asked

What is 70 CR-H used for?

70 CR-H is typically used for flat springs, clips and light coil springs. In short: low-cost carbon spring steel; good strip formability; shallow hardening only.

What is the yield strength of 70 CR-H?

70 CR-H has a typical yield strength of 1,150 MPa (167 ksi) and a tensile strength of 1,250 MPa (181 ksi) — stronger than 94% of steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 10 listed tempers.

Is 70 CR-H easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated poor (28/100, worse than 91% of steel grades). Machine in the annealed/spheroidized state (≈45–55 % of 1212) with sharp carbide or HSS tooling; above 45 HRC use grinding, EDM or CBN turning.

Can 70 CR-H be welded?

Not readily — weldability is rated poor (15/100). Effectively unweldable for structural joints — 0.7 %C gives brittle martensite; if unavoidable use 200–300 °C preheat, low-hydrogen consumables and immediate temper, and expect loss of spring temper in the HAZ.

What surface finishes work on 70 CR-H?

No corrosion resistance: specify oiling, phosphate + oil, black oxide, zinc or Zn-Ni plating (with 190–220 °C bake to avoid hydrogen embrittlement), or e-coat; shot peening markedly improves spring fatigue life.

Can 70 CR-H be formed, bent or molded?

Blank, bend and coil in the annealed or cold-rolled-hard state with generous bend radii along the grain; harden by oil quench from 800–830 °C then temper 380–480 °C, or stress relieve 200–300 °C for formed hard strip.

What is the maximum service temperature of 70 CR-H?

70 CR-H is rated for continuous use to about 150°C (302 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between 70 QT45-50 and 70-A?

QT45-50 is the default condition — standard spring service condition: best balance of elastic limit, fatigue life and residual toughness. A: pick for blanking, deep drawing, machining or cold coiling before hardening. Yield strength is 1,550 MPa in QT45-50 versus 360 MPa in A.
