Working with 20MnB-Q

Is 20MnB easy to machine?

Best machined annealed or normalized (~150–190 HB) with carbide at 120–180 m/min; gummy in the as-rolled ferrite-pearlite state, so finish-machine before carburizing and allow 0.2–0.4 mm grind stock for distortion.

Can 20MnB be welded?

Weldable with low-hydrogen electrodes at CE ≈ 0.40; preheat 100–150 °C above 20 mm and post-weld temper, but avoid welding after carburizing or quench-hardening due to hard HAZ cracking.

Can 20MnB be formed, bent or molded?

Excellent cold-heading and upsetting behaviour when spheroidize annealed; hot forge 1150–850 °C followed by normalizing to restore grain size before hardening.

What surface finishes work on 20MnB?

No inherent corrosion resistance — specify zinc/zinc-nickel plating (with 190–220 °C bake to avoid hydrogen embrittlement above 1000 MPa), phosphate + oil, Dacromet or black oxide.

20MnB-Q — frequently asked

What is 20MnB-Q used for?

20MnB-Q is typically used for gears, shafts and carburized pins. In short: low-cost 20Cr substitute; good cold-heading carburizing steel; boron-boosted hardenability.

What is the yield strength of 20MnB-Q?

20MnB-Q has a typical yield strength of 1,150 MPa (167 ksi) and a tensile strength of 1,450 MPa (210 ksi) — stronger than 94% of steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 10 listed tempers.

Is 20MnB-Q easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated poor (20/100, worse than 97% of steel grades). Best machined annealed or normalized (~150–190 HB) with carbide at 120–180 m/min; gummy in the as-rolled ferrite-pearlite state, so finish-machine before carburizing and allow 0.2–0.4 mm grind stock for distortion.

Can 20MnB-Q be welded?

Not readily — weldability is rated poor (22/100). Weldable with low-hydrogen electrodes at CE ≈ 0.40; preheat 100–150 °C above 20 mm and post-weld temper, but avoid welding after carburizing or quench-hardening due to hard HAZ cracking.

What surface finishes work on 20MnB-Q?

No inherent corrosion resistance — specify zinc/zinc-nickel plating (with 190–220 °C bake to avoid hydrogen embrittlement above 1000 MPa), phosphate + oil, Dacromet or black oxide.

Can 20MnB-Q be formed, bent or molded?

Excellent cold-heading and upsetting behaviour when spheroidize annealed; hot forge 1150–850 °C followed by normalizing to restore grain size before hardening.

What is the maximum service temperature of 20MnB-Q?

20MnB-Q is rated for continuous use to about 180°C (356 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between 20MnB-HR and 20MnB-Q?

HR is the default condition — standard stock condition for GB/T 3077 20MnB round bar and wire rod, to be heat treated by the part maker. Q: intermediate condition only — must be tempered; shows the full martensite hardness the boron addition delivers. Yield strength is 400 MPa in HR versus 1,150 MPa in Q.
