What is 1.4005?
1.4005 (X12CrS13, AISI 416, S41600) is a sulfur-added free-machining version of the 13% Cr 410-type martensitic stainless, available annealed, cold drawn, and hardened and tempered (+QT650, +QT700, 30–35 HRC). Annealed properties are 320 MPa yield, 550 MPa tensile, 25% elongation and 175 HB (88 HRB), with a machinability rating of 85 — the reference point for stainless screw-machine work. The sulfide inclusions reduce corrosion resistance (30), formability (30) and weldability, and service is limited to 600 °C. Use 1.4021/420 where welding is needed or 303 for better corrosion resistance. 1.4005 has a density of 7.7 g/cm³ (0.278 lb/in³), lighter than 83% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,480°C (2,696 °F). 1.4005 has a yield strength of 320 MPa (46.4 ksi) and a tensile strength of 550 MPa (79.8 ksi) — weaker than 60% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 25% and the elastic modulus is 215 GPa (31.2 Msi).

Working with 1.4005
Is 1.4005 easy to machine?
Benchmark free-machining stainless — run 25–40 % faster than 410 with sharp positive-rake carbide, sulfurised oil or good flood coolant; chips break cleanly and threads/knurls form well.
Can 1.4005 be welded?
Essentially not recommended: sulfur causes hot cracking; if unavoidable, preheat 200–300 °C, use 309L/410NiMo filler, minimum restraint and post-weld temper at 700–760 °C.
Can 1.4005 be formed, bent or molded?
Cold forming limited to light bending in the annealed condition with generous radii (≥2t); hot work 1150–800 °C then slow-cool anneal at 750–800 °C.

What surface finishes work on 1.4005?
Passivate in nitric acid with sodium dichromate (not plain citric) to avoid smut from sulfide inclusions; hard chrome, electroless nickel or black oxide are common; mirror polishing is limited by sulfide stringers.
