Chemical & Environmental3

Corrosion resistance is good (58/100), better than 57% of aluminum grades.

Corrosion ResistanceGood58/100
Chemical Resistance SummaryGood in neutral atmospheric and fresh-water service thanks to the passive oxide film; attacked by strong acids and alkalis, sensitive to chloride pitting and to galvanic coupling with copper alloys or steel; Sn-rich particles can act as local cathodes so anodizing is recommended for aggressive media.

Anodizing Responsegood — clear and hard anodizing both work well and are common for this alloy; Sn-bearing second-phase particles can leave faint darker specks or slight streaking in decorative bright/colour anodizing.

Working with 6262A-T4

Is 6262A easy to machine?

Excellent free-cutting behaviour: the soft Sn phase breaks chips so parts run at high feeds on CNC and multi-spindle lathes with polished-flute carbide tools; T8/T9 give the best finish and closest tolerances.

Can 6262A be welded?

Not recommended for structural welding — the low-melting Sn phase promotes hot cracking and weld porosity; use mechanical joining or, if welding is unavoidable, qualify GTAW with 4043/5356 filler on non-critical joints.

Can 6262A be formed, bent or molded?

Cold formability is limited in T6/T8/T9 (generous bend radii, avoid heavy staking); do severe forming in O or T4 and age afterwards, and keep hot-working temperatures below about 400 °C to avoid Sn-related hot shortness.

What surface finishes work on 6262A?

Clear and hard anodizing respond well and give good wear/corrosion protection; bright decorative anodizing or high-polish work can show faint speckle from Sn particles, and electroless nickel or chromate conversion are good alternatives.

6262A-T4 — frequently asked

What is 6262A-T4 used for?

6262A-T4 is typically used for precision machined fittings, fasteners and roHS-compliant free-machining parts. In short: lead-free free-machining 6000 series; screw-machine bar grade; direct 6262 replacement.

What is the yield strength of 6262A-T4?

6262A-T4 has a typical yield strength of 130 MPa (18.9 ksi) and a tensile strength of 240 MPa (34.8 ksi) — weaker than 73% of aluminum grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 8 listed tempers.

Is 6262A-T4 easy to machine?

Yes — machinability is rated very good (78/100, better than 89% of aluminum grades). Excellent free-cutting behaviour: the soft Sn phase breaks chips so parts run at high feeds on CNC and multi-spindle lathes with polished-flute carbide tools; T8/T9 give the best finish and closest tolerances.

Can 6262A-T4 be welded?

With care — weldability is rated fair (35/100). Not recommended for structural welding — the low-melting Sn phase promotes hot cracking and weld porosity; use mechanical joining or, if welding is unavoidable, qualify GTAW with 4043/5356 filler on non-critical joints.

What surface finishes work on 6262A-T4?

Clear and hard anodizing respond well and give good wear/corrosion protection; bright decorative anodizing or high-polish work can show faint speckle from Sn particles, and electroless nickel or chromate conversion are good alternatives.

Can 6262A-T4 be formed, bent or molded?

Cold formability is limited in T6/T8/T9 (generous bend radii, avoid heavy staking); do severe forming in O or T4 and age afterwards, and keep hot-working temperatures below about 400 °C to avoid Sn-related hot shortness.

What is the maximum service temperature of 6262A-T4?

6262A-T4 is rated for continuous use to about 120°C (248 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between 6262A-T6 and 6262A-O?

T6 is the default condition — standard stocked rod/bar condition: best balance of strength, ductility and free-machining behaviour for general screw-machined parts. O: softest condition, used only as a processing state for heavy cold working or re-drawing before heat treatment. Yield strength is 275 MPa in T6 versus 60 MPa in O.
