What is Ti-13V-11Cr-3Al?

Ti-13V-11Cr-3Al (UNS R58010, AMS 4917, AMS 4959) is one of the earliest fully beta titanium alloys, strengthened by aging after solution treatment or cold work. Engineers use it where sheet must be formed cold and then aged: typical properties are 860 MPa yield, 930 MPa tensile, 16% elongation, 300 HB (31 HRC), 102 GPa modulus and service to 260 °C. It is historically associated with supersonic airframe skins. Machinability is low (16), the alloy is effectively non-formable once aged, and Ti-15Mo-2.7Nb-3Al-0.2Si is the more common choice for new high-temperature sheet designs. Ti-13V-11Cr-3Al has a density of 4.87 g/cm³ (0.176 lb/in³), heavier than 95% of titanium grades. It melts at 1,427°C (2,601 °F). Ti-13V-11Cr-3Al has a yield strength of 860 MPa (125 ksi) and a tensile strength of 930 MPa (135 ksi) — stronger than 71% of titanium grades. Elongation at break is 16% and the elastic modulus is 102 GPa (14.8 Msi).

Working with Ti-13V-11Cr-3Al

Is Ti-13V-11Cr-3Al easy to machine?

Machine like a hard beta titanium: rigid setups, sharp uncoated-carbide or PVD-coated tools, 15–30 m/min surface speed, heavy flood coolant, positive feed to avoid work hardening; machine before aging where possible.

Can Ti-13V-11Cr-3Al be welded?

GTAW, plasma or EBW under high-purity argon/vacuum with full backside shielding gives ductile single-phase beta welds; post-weld aging strengthens but embrittles the HAZ, so weld in ST condition and age the assembly.

Can Ti-13V-11Cr-3Al be formed, bent or molded?

In the ST condition it cold-forms and roll-forms nearly like austenitic stainless (allow generous springback and 3–4 t bend radii); after aging it is essentially non-formable.

Ti-13V-11Cr-3Al — frequently asked

What is Ti-13V-11Cr-3Al used for?

Ti-13V-11Cr-3Al is typically used for airframe skins, high-temperature structural sheet and historic supersonic aircraft parts. In short: first production beta titanium; cold-forms then age hardens; 260 °C service capability.

What is the yield strength of Ti-13V-11Cr-3Al?

Ti-13V-11Cr-3Al has a typical yield strength of 860 MPa (125 ksi) and a tensile strength of 930 MPa (135 ksi) — stronger than 71% of titanium grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 4 listed tempers.

Is Ti-13V-11Cr-3Al easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated poor (16/100, worse than 93% of titanium grades). Machine like a hard beta titanium: rigid setups, sharp uncoated-carbide or PVD-coated tools, 15–30 m/min surface speed, heavy flood coolant, positive feed to avoid work hardening; machine before aging where possible.
