What is Ti-15Mo?
Ti-15Mo is a binary beta titanium alloy (ASTM F2066, UNS R58150) stabilized with molybdenum only, containing no aluminum or vanadium. Engineers specify it for implants because the elastic modulus is about 78 GPa — well below alpha-beta titanium — with 570 MPa yield, 760 MPa tensile, 22% elongation and 27 HRC in the default condition; it is supplied as bar, wire, plate and forgings in ST, MA, STA, CW and CW+A conditions. Limits are poor machinability (score 24), a service ceiling near 300 °C, and narrower mill availability than Ti-6Al-4V. Where higher strength matters more than low modulus, Ti-6Al-4V ELI is the usual alternative. Ti-15Mo has a density of 4.96 g/cm³ (0.179 lb/in³), heavier than 98% of titanium grades. It melts at 1,670°C (3,038 °F). Ti-15Mo has a yield strength of 570 MPa (82.7 ksi) and a tensile strength of 760 MPa (110 ksi) — weaker than 52% of titanium grades. Elongation at break is 22% and the elastic modulus is 78 GPa (11.3 Msi).

Working with Ti-15Mo
Is Ti-15Mo easy to machine?
Machine like a tough beta titanium: rigid setup, sharp uncoated-carbide or AlTiN tools, low surface speed (~20–35 m/min), heavy feed, copious flood coolant and no dwelling — work hardening and galling are worse than Ti-6Al-4V.
Can Ti-15Mo be welded?
GTAW/PAW/EBW/laser weld readily in inert gas or vacuum with matching filler; beta phase keeps welds ductile as-welded, but avoid contamination pickup and re-solution treat if aging is planned.
Can Ti-15Mo be formed, bent or molded?
In the solution-treated beta condition it is the most cold-formable titanium class — bending, deep drawing and wire drawing are practical; hot working above the ~750 °C beta transus for forging, then solution treat before final forming.

Ti-15Mo — frequently asked
What is Ti-15Mo used for?
Ti-15Mo is typically used for surgical implants, dental devices and biomedical fasteners. In short: lowest-modulus implant titanium; most cold-formable titanium class; aluminum- and vanadium-free.
What is the yield strength of Ti-15Mo?
Ti-15Mo has a typical yield strength of 570 MPa (82.7 ksi) and a tensile strength of 760 MPa (110 ksi) — weaker than 52% of titanium grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 5 listed tempers.
Is Ti-15Mo easy to machine?
Not especially — machinability is rated poor (24/100, worse than 51% of titanium grades).
Yes — weldability is rated very good (72/100). GTAW/PAW/EBW/laser weld readily in inert gas or vacuum with matching filler; beta phase keeps welds ductile as-welded, but avoid contamination pickup and re-solution treat if aging is planned.
