What is Ti-12Mo-6Zr-2Fe?
Ti-12Mo-6Zr-2Fe (UNS R58120, ASTM F1813) is an aluminum- and vanadium-free metastable beta titanium alloy developed for orthopedic implants, where its 80 GPa modulus reduces stress shielding compared with Ti-6Al-4V. Typical properties are 990 MPa yield, 1060 MPa tensile, 19% elongation and 32 HRC, and it cold-forms well (formability 70) in the solution-treated condition for bar, wire and forged stems. Machinability is poor (15), service is limited to about 250 °C, and no weldability rating is on file, so welded joints must be qualified individually. Ti-12Mo-6Zr-2Fe has a density of 5 g/cm³ (0.181 lb/in³), heavier than 99% of titanium grades. It melts at 1,620°C (2,948 °F). Ti-12Mo-6Zr-2Fe has a yield strength of 990 MPa (144 ksi) and a tensile strength of 1,060 MPa (154 ksi) — stronger than 92% of titanium grades. Elongation at break is 19% and the elastic modulus is 80 GPa (11.6 Msi).
