Working with TA15-DA

Is TA15 easy to machine?

Machine like Ti-6Al-4V but slightly harder: rigid setup, sharp uncoated-carbide or PVD-coated tools, vc ≈ 25–45 m/min, high-pressure flood coolant, avoid dwell and light rubbing cuts to prevent work hardening and fire risk from fine chips.

Can TA15 be welded?

Very good weldability by GTAW, plasma and electron-beam with full inert (Ar/He) shielding or vacuum, matching TA15 filler, clean/degreased edges, low interpass temperature and 550–650 °C post-weld stress relief.

Can TA15 be formed, bent or molded?

Cold formability is limited (bend radii ≥4–5 t); hot forming at 750–900 °C or superplastic forming/diffusion bonding at ~900–930 °C is the normal route for panels and complex frames.

What surface finishes work on TA15?

Chemically mill or pickle in HNO₃/HF to remove alpha-case after hot work; anodise (colour or hard/MAO) or apply solid-film lubricant for galling control; polish readily to a satin-bright surface.

TA15-DA — frequently asked

What is TA15-DA used for?

TA15-DA is typically used for aircraft structural parts, welded fuselage components and pressure vessels. In short: weldable near-alpha airframe alloy; 500 °C structural capability; SPF/DB panel grade.

What is the yield strength of TA15-DA?

TA15-DA has a typical yield strength of 880 MPa (128 ksi) and a tensile strength of 970 MPa (141 ksi) — stronger than 78% of titanium grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 6 listed tempers.

Is TA15-DA easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated poor (19/100, worse than 78% of titanium grades). Machine like Ti-6Al-4V but slightly harder: rigid setup, sharp uncoated-carbide or PVD-coated tools, vc ≈ 25–45 m/min, high-pressure flood coolant, avoid dwell and light rubbing cuts to prevent work hardening and fire risk from fine chips.

Can TA15-DA be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated very good (82/100). Very good weldability by GTAW, plasma and electron-beam with full inert (Ar/He) shielding or vacuum, matching TA15 filler, clean/degreased edges, low interpass temperature and 550–650 °C post-weld stress relief.

What surface finishes work on TA15-DA?

Chemically mill or pickle in HNO₃/HF to remove alpha-case after hot work; anodise (colour or hard/MAO) or apply solid-film lubricant for galling control; polish readily to a satin-bright surface.

Can TA15-DA be formed, bent or molded?

Cold formability is limited (bend radii ≥4–5 t); hot forming at 750–900 °C or superplastic forming/diffusion bonding at ~900–930 °C is the normal route for panels and complex frames.

What is the maximum service temperature of TA15-DA?

TA15-DA is rated for continuous use to about 520°C (968 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between TA15-M and TA15-STA?

M is the default condition — standard stocked condition for sheet, plate, bar and forgings; balanced strength, ductility and weldability. STA: use where the highest room-temperature strength is required from TA15 sections; ductility and weld repairability drop. Yield strength is 900 MPa in M versus 990 MPa in STA.
