What is T2-ANN?
T2-ANN is T2 heat treated to ANN — standard as-supplied condition for bars and blanks: soft enough to machine tool bodies before hardening. T2-ANN has a yield strength of 570 MPa (82.7 ksi) and a tensile strength of 900 MPa (131 ksi) — stronger than 74% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 20% and the elastic modulus is 215 GPa (31.2 Msi). T2-ANN has a density of 8.67 g/cm³ (0.313 lb/in³), heavier than 99% of steel grades. It melts at 1,425°C (2,597 °F).
Limitations
- Poor heat conductor — 21 W/m·K (12.1 BTU/hr·ft·°F), worse than 95% of steel grades
- High embodied carbon — 4.2 kg CO₂/kg, worse than 95% of steel grades
- Low electrical conductivity — 3.1 % IACS, worse than 89% of steel grades
- Difficult to machine — 32/100, worse than 87% of steel grades
- Limited formability — 15/100, worse than 87% of steel grades

Working with T2-ANN
Is T2 easy to machine?
Machine only in the annealed condition (~230 HB) with sharp cobalt-HSS or coated carbide, low speed and rigid setup; after hardening only grinding or EDM, and the 2% V content makes grinding wheels load faster than on T1.
Can T2 be welded?
Not a structural weld metal — repair-weld only with matching HSS filler, 500–550 °C preheat, interpass held hot, and an immediate triple temper to avoid quench cracking.
Can T2 be formed, bent or molded?
Hot forge 1100–1150 °C, never below ~900 °C, slow-cool then anneal at 870–900 °C; cold forming is impractical.
What surface finishes work on T2?
Harden 1260–1280 °C (salt/vacuum, preheat steps), quench in oil/gas, temper 3× at 540–560 °C; finish with grinding plus black oxide, steam treat, nitriding or TiN/TiAlN PVD for wear and rust protection.

T2-ANN — frequently asked
What is T2-ANN used for?
T2-ANN is typically used for cutting tools, reamers, form tools and lathe tools. In short: higher-vanadium T1; wear-resistant tungsten HSS; grinds slower than T1.
What is the yield strength of T2-ANN?
T2-ANN has a typical yield strength of 570 MPa (82.7 ksi) and a tensile strength of 900 MPa (131 ksi) — stronger than 74% of steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 5 listed tempers.
Is T2-ANN easy to machine?
Not especially — machinability is rated poor (32/100, worse than 87% of steel grades). Machine only in the annealed condition (~230 HB) with sharp cobalt-HSS or coated carbide, low speed and rigid setup; after hardening only grinding or EDM, and the 2% V content makes grinding wheels load faster than on T1.
Can T2-ANN be welded?
Not readily — weldability is rated poor (20/100). Not a structural weld metal — repair-weld only with matching HSS filler, 500–550 °C preheat, interpass held hot, and an immediate triple temper to avoid quench cracking.
What surface finishes work on T2-ANN?
Harden 1260–1280 °C (salt/vacuum, preheat steps), quench in oil/gas, temper 3× at 540–560 °C; finish with grinding plus black oxide, steam treat, nitriding or TiN/TiAlN PVD for wear and rust protection.
Can T2-ANN be formed, bent or molded?
Hot forge 1100–1150 °C, never below ~900 °C, slow-cool then anneal at 870–900 °C; cold forming is impractical.
What is the maximum service temperature of T2-ANN?
T2-ANN is rated for continuous use to about 400°C (752 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.
What is the difference between T2-ANN and T2 HT-66?
ANN is the default condition — standard as-supplied condition for bars and blanks: soft enough to machine tool bodies before hardening. HT-66: top-hardness condition for finishing cuts on abrasive or hard workpieces; lowest toughness, avoid interrupted cuts. Yield strength is 570 MPa in ANN versus 2,000 MPa in HT-66.
