Working with 1043-N

Is 1043 easy to machine?

Machines well at ~60 % of 1212 with carbide at 120–180 m/min; cold-drawn or normalized-and-cold-drawn bar gives the cleanest chip and best finish, annealed bar tends to smear.

Can 1043 be welded?

Carbon equivalent ≈ 0.55–0.6, so preheat 150–260 °C, use low-hydrogen consumables and post-weld stress relief or temper to avoid HAZ cracking.

Can 1043 be formed, bent or molded?

Hot forge 1100–1200 °C; cold bending and heading are limited — anneal or spheroidize first and use generous bend radii (≥3t).

What surface finishes work on 1043?

No inherent corrosion protection: specify oil, phosphate-and-oil, black oxide, zinc or nickel plating, or paint; grinds and polishes to a good finish after hardening.

What is the yield strength of 1043-N?

1043-N has a typical yield strength of 390 MPa (56.6 ksi) and a tensile strength of 610 MPa (88.5 ksi) — weaker than 64% of steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 9 listed tempers.

Is 1043-N easy to machine?

Reasonably — machinability is rated good (60/100, better than 83% of steel grades). Machines well at ~60 % of 1212 with carbide at 120–180 m/min; cold-drawn or normalized-and-cold-drawn bar gives the cleanest chip and best finish, annealed bar tends to smear.

Can 1043-N be welded?

With care — weldability is rated fair (42/100). Carbon equivalent ≈ 0.55–0.6, so preheat 150–260 °C, use low-hydrogen consumables and post-weld stress relief or temper to avoid HAZ cracking.

What surface finishes work on 1043-N?

No inherent corrosion protection: specify oil, phosphate-and-oil, black oxide, zinc or nickel plating, or paint; grinds and polishes to a good finish after hardening.

Can 1043-N be formed, bent or molded?

Hot forge 1100–1200 °C; cold bending and heading are limited — anneal or spheroidize first and use generous bend radii (≥3t).

What is the maximum service temperature of 1043-N?

1043-N is rated for continuous use to about 350°C (662 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between 1043-CD and 1043-HR?

CD is the default condition — most commonly stocked condition: higher strength, bright surface and close size tolerance straight from the bar. HR: cheapest form for parts that will be fully machined or subsequently heat treated; scaled surface and loose tolerances. Yield strength is 530 MPa in CD versus 305 MPa in HR.
