Working with TPA (PEBA) SD63

Is TPA (PEBA) easy to machine?

Soft elastomers do not suit conventional cutting. If required, freeze the part and use sharp single-edge tools at high speed and low feed, or cut sheet by waterjet or laser.

Can TPA (PEBA) be welded?

Hot-plate, ultrasonic, HF and hot-gas welding all work. It fuses directly to PA12 and PA11, and overmoulding TPA onto PA substrates gives good bond strength.

Can TPA (PEBA) be formed, bent or molded?

Dry 4-6 h at 80 °C to below 0.05 % moisture before moulding; melt 220-260 °C, mould 20-50 °C. It can also be extruded into tube and film, blown into film, rotomoulded, or bead-foamed with supercritical CO2 or N2.

What surface finishes work on TPA (PEBA)?

Plasma or corona treatment improves ink and adhesive adhesion; use PU or polyamide-based inks and adhesives. Not platable; colour is normally achieved with masterbatch.

TPA (PEBA) SD63 — frequently asked

What is TPA (PEBA) SD63 used for?

TPA (PEBA) SD63 is typically used for running shoe midsoles, 3D-printed lattice cushioning, ski boots, sports equipment and flexible medical catheters. In short: highest energy return elastomer; lowest density in the family; flexible at low temperature.

What is the yield strength of TPA (PEBA) SD63?

TPA (PEBA) SD63 has a typical yield strength of 24 MPa (3.48 ksi) and a tensile strength of 55 MPa (7.98 ksi) — weaker than 76% of polymer grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 13 listed tempers.

Is TPA (PEBA) SD63 easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated poor (30/100, worse than 87% of polymer grades). Soft elastomers do not suit conventional cutting. If required, freeze the part and use sharp single-edge tools at high speed and low feed, or cut sheet by waterjet or laser.

Can TPA (PEBA) SD63 be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated very good (74/100). Hot-plate, ultrasonic, HF and hot-gas welding all work. It fuses directly to PA12 and PA11, and overmoulding TPA onto PA substrates gives good bond strength.

What surface finishes work on TPA (PEBA) SD63?

Plasma or corona treatment improves ink and adhesive adhesion; use PU or polyamide-based inks and adhesives. Not platable; colour is normally achieved with masterbatch.

Can TPA (PEBA) SD63 be formed, bent or molded?

Dry 4-6 h at 80 °C to below 0.05 % moisture before moulding; melt 220-260 °C, mould 20-50 °C. It can also be extruded into tube and film, blown into film, rotomoulded, or bead-foamed with supercritical CO2 or N2.

What is the maximum service temperature of TPA (PEBA) SD63?

TPA (PEBA) SD63 is rated for continuous use to about 85°C (185 °F), and briefly to 120°C. Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between TPA (PEBA) UNF and TPA (PEBA) SD72?

UNF is the default condition — use the unfilled natural grade as the default for injection molding and extrusion — Shore D 60 with 52 MPa tensile and 430 % elongation suits shoe midsoles, functional parts and tubing. SD72: pick the hardest standard level — Shore D 72, 0.51 GPa modulus, 58 MPa tensile — for racing-shoe carbon-plate liners and high-stiffness elastic hinges; elongation is reduced to 350 %. Yield strength is 20 MPa in UNF versus 31 MPa in SD72.
