What is PE Foam Board?

PE Foam Board is a continuously extruded, non-crosslinked LDPE plank foam supplied to ASTM D3575, JIS K6767 and GB/T 25325, and is distinct from bead-molded EPE. It is produced as thick blocks and sheets that are sawn, skived or die-cut into cushioning, buoyancy and packaging inserts; the 0.033 g/cm3 reference grade gives 0.35 MPa tensile strength, 80 % elongation and 0.038 W/m-K conductivity. Service is limited to about 80 C and the low-energy surface needs pretreatment before bonding or printing. Crosslinked XLPE is the alternative where finer cells and higher heat resistance are required. PE Foam Board has a density of 0.03 g/cm³ (0.0012 lb/in³), lighter than 92% of polymer grades. Its glass-transition temperature is -110°C (-166 °F). PE Foam Board has a tensile strength of 0.35 MPa (0.0508 ksi), weaker than 92% of polymer grades. Elongation at break is 80% and the elastic modulus is 0 GPa (1.45×10⁻⁴ Msi).

Working with PE Foam Board

Is PE Foam Board easy to machine?

Cuts cleanly with band saw, hot wire, oscillating/drag knife or CNC router with single-flute sharp tooling; no lubricant, use vacuum hold-down and avoid melt smearing at high spindle speed.

Can PE Foam Board be welded?

Planks are laminated by hot-plate/hot-air fusion or contact adhesive; solvent cements do not work on PE and surfaces need flame or corona treatment before bonding or printing.

Can PE Foam Board be formed, bent or molded?

Sheets can be thermoformed/compression-moulded near 120–140 °C surface temperature, and skived, split or die-cut into inserts; non-crosslinked foam is less forgiving than XLPE and can collapse if overheated.
