What is EPS 100?

EPS 100 is an expanded polystyrene bead foam to EN 13163 rated at 100 kPa compressive strength, with nominal density 0.021 g/cm³ (21 kg/m³) and thermal conductivity 0.036 W/m·K. It is the usual choice for floor insulation under moderate loads, and is available as flame-retardant white board, grey graphite-loaded board, non-FR stock, block-cut sheet and shape-moulded parts. It has no UV or solvent resistance and must be covered by screed, render or a facing; solvent-borne primers and bitumen will attack it. Use EPS 80 for low-load wall insulation or EPS 150 where the compressive class must rise. EPS 100 has a density of 0.02 g/cm³ (7.59×10⁻⁴ lb/in³), lighter than 97% of polymer grades. Its glass-transition temperature is 100°C (212 °F). EPS 100 has a tensile strength of 0.25 MPa (0.0363 ksi), weaker than 95% of polymer grades. Elongation at break is 1.8% and the elastic modulus is 0.01 GPa (9.43×10⁻⁴ Msi).

Working with EPS 100

Is EPS 100 easy to machine?

Cut with hot wire, fine-tooth band saw or CNC router at high feed; use dust/static extraction and avoid solvent-based coolants.

Can EPS 100 be welded?

No fusion welding — join with hot-plate/steam fusion in the mould or with water-based/EPS-safe adhesives and mechanical fixings.

Can EPS 100 be formed, bent or molded?

Made by pre-expanding EPS beads with steam (~100–110 °C), ageing, then block or shape moulding at 0.6–1.0 bar steam; drying and 3–7 day ageing needed before cutting to control shrinkage.
