What is JIS A9511 EPS?

JIS A9511 EPS covers bead-moulded expanded polystyrene insulation boards, classified into density and strength grades 1 through 4 with a special (tokugo) grade and flame-retardant types. Default values on file are 20 kg/m³ density, 0.2 MPa tensile strength, 5 MPa elastic modulus and thermal conductivity 0.038 W/(m·K). Engineers choose it for low cost, low weight and easy shaping, supplied as hot-wire-cut block board or steam shape-moulded parts. It is not weldable, is dissolved by solvent paints and hot bitumen, and needs UV protection; extruded XPS to JIS A9521 gives lower conductivity and higher compressive strength for load-bearing or wet locations. JIS A9511 EPS has a density of 0.02 g/cm³ (7.23×10⁻⁴ lb/in³), lighter than 98% of polymer grades. Its glass-transition temperature is 100°C (212 °F). JIS A9511 EPS has a yield strength of 0.18 MPa (0.0261 ksi) and a tensile strength of 0.2 MPa (0.029 ksi) — weaker than 99% of polymer grades. Elongation at break is 1.5% and the elastic modulus is 0.01 GPa (7.25×10⁻⁴ Msi).

Working with JIS A9511 EPS

Is JIS A9511 EPS easy to machine?

Cut with hot wire, band saw or sharp blade; avoid high-speed routing which melts and generates static-clinging dust — vacuum extraction recommended.

Can JIS A9511 EPS be welded?

Not weldable in the conventional sense; blocks are joined by hot-plate/steam fusion, EPS-safe (water-based or PU) adhesive, or mechanical toggles.

Can JIS A9511 EPS be formed, bent or molded?

Pre-expand beads with steam, age, then shape-mould in a steam chest at ~0.6–1.0 bar (105–125 °C); allow 0.3–0.7 % shrinkage and 24 h+ drying/curing before machining.
