What is C578 Type XV?

ASTM C578 Type XV is the highest-density standard EPS grade in ASTM C578, a rigid closed-cell moulded styrenic foam made from pentane-loaded bead pre-expanded to about 48 kg/m³. Engineers specify it where compressive strength governs, in heavy structural geofoam and high-load insulation, and it is supplied as block and cut shapes in flame-retardant, non-FR, graphite-loaded and geofoam versions. Thermal conductivity is 0.0335 W/m·K and maximum service temperature is 75 °C. It is not weldable, is attacked by solvents and hydrocarbons, and needs permanent UV cover; XPS Type VII or X suits high load combined with sustained wetting. C578 Type XV has a density of 0.05 g/cm³ (0.0017 lb/in³), lighter than 89% of polymer grades. Its glass-transition temperature is 100°C (212 °F). C578 Type XV has a tensile strength of 0.55 MPa (0.0798 ksi), weaker than 88% of polymer grades. Elongation at break is 2.5% and the elastic modulus is 0.02 GPa (0.0023 Msi).

Working with C578 Type XV

Is C578 Type XV easy to machine?

Hot-wire cutting gives the cleanest profiles; CNC router/bandsaw work well with sharp tools, high rpm and vacuum extraction, but avoid tool rub that melts and welds the kerf.

Can C578 Type XV be welded?

Not fusion-welded in practice — join with EPS-compatible water-based or solvent-free PU adhesives, or steam-fuse in the mould; solvent adhesives dissolve the foam.

Can C578 Type XV be formed, bent or molded?

Made by pre-expanding pentane-loaded bead to ~48 kg/m³, ageing, then steam block-moulding at ~110–120 °C; blocks must be aged/dried several days before sawing to control shrinkage and dimensional drift.
