What is XPS 400?
XPS 400 is an extruded closed-cell polystyrene board to EN 13164 rated at 400 kPa compressive strength, with nominal density 0.044 g/cm³ (44 kg/m³) and thermal conductivity 0.034 W/m·K. The higher load class suits moderate-traffic decks and structural insulation, and stock covers CO2- and HFC-blown, B1 fire-classified, planed, shiplap/tongue-and-groove and HD500 high-density variants. Boards are extrusion-formed only, so shaping is subtractive, and the foam must be shielded from UV, solvents and hot bitumen. XPS 300 is the lower-cost option for standard below-grade work; the HD500 condition covers heavier loads. XPS 400 has a density of 0.04 g/cm³ (0.0016 lb/in³), lighter than 90% of polymer grades. Its glass-transition temperature is 100°C (212 °F). XPS 400 has a yield strength of 0.4 MPa (0.058 ksi) and a tensile strength of 0.6 MPa (0.087 ksi) — weaker than 96% of polymer grades. Elongation at break is 2.5% and the elastic modulus is 0.02 GPa (0.0026 Msi).

Advantages
- Easy to machine — 92/100, better than 99% of polymer grades

Working with XPS 400
Is XPS 400 easy to machine?
Cut with hot wire, sharp knife, fine-tooth saw or CNC router at high feed; avoid solvent-based marker/adhesive contact and collect static-prone dust.
Can XPS 400 be welded?
Not weldable in the structural sense; panels are joined with mechanical fasteners, XPS-compatible foam adhesives or hot-melt/heat plate tack for CNC blanks.
Can XPS 400 be formed, bent or molded?
Produced only by continuous extrusion of the PS/blowing-agent melt through a slot die into a calibrated board; site shaping is subtractive, thermoforming is not practical.
