Edge Rounding
Mechanical finishing · Mechanical
Edge rounding deliberately replaces a sharp edge with a controlled radius or broad edge break.

What is Edge rounding?
It improves handling, coating coverage, fatigue behavior, and resistance to edge chipping.
How it works
A radius cutter, 120–240 grit abrasive belt, brush, centrifugal machine, or robotic tool removes material at exposed edges. Unlike generic deburring, the target is measurable geometry, commonly a 0.2–1.0 mm radius for fabricated parts. Local worked surfaces typically fall near Ra 0.8–6.3 µm (32–250 µin), while adjacent faces should remain unchanged. The drawing must identify included and excluded edges. Measure functional Ra under ASME B46.1 or ISO 21920.
Why specify it
- Creates measurable 0.2–1.0 mm radii
- Improves paint and powder coverage at edges
- Reduces handling cuts
- Removes stress-raising knife edges
Where it falls short
- Reduces local part envelope
- External tools may not reach internal edges
- Mass methods round all exposed edges
- Cosmetic consistency requires controlled tooling
Edge rounding at a glance
Edge rounding is a middle-of-the-range finish; its best score is cosmetic quality (35 of 100), at a budget cost. It adds little corrosion protection or lubricity. Surface hardness is not rated: the finish leaves the part's own surface.
Each score is 0–100 against every finish in this catalog. Corrosion comes from salt-spray life (ASTM B117, log scale) and hardness from the finish layer's Vickers or pencil hardness; cosmetic, lubricity and cost are FabDigit's engineering assessment. Economy on the radar is the inverse of cost.

How Edge rounding is applied, and what it does to the part
- 1Identify included edges
- 2Choose cutter brush or abrasive method
- 3Form specified radius
- 4Blend transitions
- 5Inspect radius burrs and parent surfaces
| Dimensions | The specified radius removes the corner and changes local dimensions; inspect radius and adjacent wall thickness after processing. |
|---|---|
| Build-up per side | 0 µm — No buildup; geometry is intentionally removed to form the specified radius. |
| Masking | Usually needed. Protect datums, mating edges, electrical contacts, and intentionally sharp features. |
| Electrical | Unchanged |
| Appearance | Uniformly softened edges with machining or abrasive blend marks. |
| Added lead time | 1–3 working days on top of the bare part |
Design rules for Edge rounding
What to decide on the drawing before the part goes to the finisher.
- Dimension the radius or chamfer. The phrase edge rounding is not measurable.
- Mark excluded edges.Mating and datum edges may need to stay sharp.
- Check remaining wall thickness.Large radii can weaken thin corners.
- Specify local Ra if functional.Radius size does not control texture.
Edge rounding versus the alternatives

The radar overlays Edge rounding with Deburring, its most common alternative — chosen when only burr removal and a minimal edge break are needed. Scores in the table are 0–100 across every finish in the catalog.
Cost, lead time and compliance
Relative cost
Edge Rounding is a budget-cost finish ($): cheaper than about 85 % of the finishes FabDigit quotes.
Finishing is priced per part with a lot minimum, from FabDigit's own China-side rates. The exact figure appears on the instant quote once the part is uploaded.
Lead time and compliance
| Added lead time | 1–3 working days |

| RoHS | Compliant |

Edge rounding — frequently asked
edge rounding vs deburring
Deburring removes protruding burrs with minimal geometry change. Edge rounding intentionally creates a measured radius, often 0.2–1.0 mm.
does edge rounding improve powder coating
Yes. A rounded edge reduces electrostatic and film-thinning problems compared with a knife edge, improving coverage consistency.
what radius should sharp edges have
Fabricated handling edges often use 0.2–1.0 mm, but the correct value depends on wall thickness, fit, and coating. Put the range on the drawing.
what Ra is an edge rounded surface
Abrasively rounded zones commonly measure Ra 0.8–6.3 µm (32–250 µin). Cutter-finished edges may differ, so specify Ra only where functional.
can tumbling round edges
Yes, but it acts on every exposed edge and may remove about 0.01–0.05 mm from surfaces. A cutter or robot is better for a defined selective radius.
