Working with M-6-SRA

Is M-6 easy to machine?

Best processed by precision slitting, punching and laser/EDM cutting with carbide or coated tooling — the ceramic-like C-5 coating is abrasive and thermal cut edges must be de-burred; the M6 HSS variant is machined only in the annealed state and ground after hardening.

Can M-6 be welded?

TIG/laser tacking of core clamps is possible but any weld or heat-affected zone locally destroys the Goss texture and short-circuits laminations, so joints are kept off the flux path.

Can M-6 be formed, bent or molded?

Handle as a springy, notch-sensitive strip: shear along the rolling direction, keep bend radii generous, and stress-relief anneal at ~800 °C in inert atmosphere when strain is significant.

What surface finishes work on M-6?

Supplied with an inorganic phosphate/forsterite (C-5) insulating coating that also gives light rust protection; do not anodize (ferrous), and re-coat or oil any bare sheared edges.

M-6-SRA — frequently asked

What is M-6-SRA used for?

M-6-SRA is typically used for distribution transformer cores, power transformer cores, wound C-cores and toroidal cores, reactor and choke cores, current transformer cores and instrument transformer laminations. In short: standard grain-oriented transformer steel; lowest loss along rolling direction; lower cost than Hi-B.

What is the yield strength of M-6-SRA?

M-6-SRA has a typical yield strength of 295 MPa (42.8 ksi) and a tensile strength of 335 MPa (48.6 ksi) — weaker than 87% of steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 4 listed tempers.

Is M-6-SRA easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated fair (38/100, worse than 80% of steel grades). Best processed by precision slitting, punching and laser/EDM cutting with carbide or coated tooling — the ceramic-like C-5 coating is abrasive and thermal cut edges must be de-burred; the M6 HSS variant is machined only in the annealed state and ground after hardening.

Can M-6-SRA be welded?

With care — weldability is rated fair (40/100). TIG/laser tacking of core clamps is possible but any weld or heat-affected zone locally destroys the Goss texture and short-circuits laminations, so joints are kept off the flux path.

What surface finishes work on M-6-SRA?

Supplied with an inorganic phosphate/forsterite (C-5) insulating coating that also gives light rust protection; do not anodize (ferrous), and re-coat or oil any bare sheared edges.

Can M-6-SRA be formed, bent or molded?

Handle as a springy, notch-sensitive strip: shear along the rolling direction, keep bend radii generous, and stress-relief anneal at ~800 °C in inert atmosphere when strain is significant.

What is the maximum service temperature of M-6-SRA?

M-6-SRA is rated for continuous use to about 200°C (392 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.
