Working with C50-AC

Is C50 easy to machine?

Machines best at 180–220 HB (annealed/normalized); above 32 HRC use coated carbide, rigid setups and reduced feeds — no free-machining sulfur unless the C50R variant is specified.

Can C50 be welded?

Poor weldability (CE ≈ 0.6–0.7): preheat 250–350 °C, low-hydrogen consumables, interpass control and post-weld stress relief/temper are required to avoid HAZ martensite cracking.

Can C50 be formed, bent or molded?

Cold forming only in annealed/spheroidized condition with generous bend radii (≥2–3 t); hot forge at 1100–850 °C then normalize; oil- or water-quench from 820–860 °C, temper 150–650 °C to the required hardness.

What surface finishes work on C50?

Bare steel rusts quickly — protect by oiling, phosphating, black oxide, zinc or hard-chrome plating, or paint; grinds and polishes well after hardening.

C50-AC — frequently asked

What is C50-AC used for?

C50-AC is typically used for crankshafts, gears, axles, high-strength bolts and rail wheels. In short: higher hardness than C40; wear-resistant after quench and temper; weldable only with preheat.

What is the yield strength of C50-AC?

C50-AC has a typical yield strength of 350 MPa (50.8 ksi) and a tensile strength of 600 MPa (87 ksi) — weaker than 74% of steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 11 listed tempers.

Is C50-AC easy to machine?

Reasonably — machinability is rated good (62/100, better than 89% of steel grades). Machines best at 180–220 HB (annealed/normalized); above 32 HRC use coated carbide, rigid setups and reduced feeds — no free-machining sulfur unless the C50R variant is specified.

Can C50-AC be welded?

With care — weldability is rated fair (36/100). Poor weldability (CE ≈ 0.6–0.7): preheat 250–350 °C, low-hydrogen consumables, interpass control and post-weld stress relief/temper are required to avoid HAZ martensite cracking.

What surface finishes work on C50-AC?

Bare steel rusts quickly — protect by oiling, phosphating, black oxide, zinc or hard-chrome plating, or paint; grinds and polishes well after hardening.

Can C50-AC be formed, bent or molded?

Cold forming only in annealed/spheroidized condition with generous bend radii (≥2–3 t); hot forge at 1100–850 °C then normalize; oil- or water-quench from 820–860 °C, temper 150–650 °C to the required hardness.

What is the maximum service temperature of C50-AC?

C50-AC is rated for continuous use to about 350°C (662 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between C50-N and C50 QT-Low?

N is the default condition — standard stocked/uniform-structure condition: balanced strength and machinability, good base for later Q&T or induction hardening. QT-Low: maximum hardness/wear resistance for thin sections, springs and tools; brittle, avoid impact and stress raisers. Yield strength is 425 MPa in N versus 1,600 MPa in QT-Low.
