Working with Alloy 926 CW-HT
Is Alloy 926 easy to machine?
Gummy and highly work-hardening: use rigid setups, sharp positive-rake carbide, 25–40 % of 316L cutting speeds, heavy feeds to stay under the hardened skin, and flood high-lubricity coolant.
Can Alloy 926 be welded?
GTAW/GMAW/SMAW with over-alloyed Ni-base filler (ERNiCrMo-3/-4, ERNiCrMo-13) to prevent Mo segregation in the weld; no preheat, keep interpass below ~150 °C, low heat input, argon backing, no post-weld heat treatment.
Can Alloy 926 be formed, bent or molded?
Cold forms well but needs roughly twice the press force of 316L and generous springback allowance; hot work 1150–1200 °C with immediate solution anneal at 1100–1180 °C and rapid quench.
What surface finishes work on Alloy 926?
Pickle (HNO3-HF) and passivate per ASTM A967 after welding or heat tint to restore full pitting resistance; polishes to a bright finish; not anodised, and iron contamination from carbon-steel tooling must be avoided.

Alloy 926 CW-HT — frequently asked
What is Alloy 926 CW-HT used for?
Alloy 926 CW-HT is typically used for FGD scrubber systems, seawater and offshore equipment, pulp/paper bleach plants and sour gas and chemical processing. In short: 6.5 % Mo superaustenitic; upgrade from 904L; near nickel-alloy corrosion resistance.
What is the yield strength of Alloy 926 CW-HT?
Alloy 926 CW-HT has a typical yield strength of 1,000 MPa (145 ksi) and a tensile strength of 1,250 MPa (181 ksi) — stronger than 98% of stainless steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 3 listed tempers.
Is Alloy 926 CW-HT easy to machine?
Not especially — machinability is rated poor (22/100, worse than 95% of stainless steel grades). Gummy and highly work-hardening: use rigid setups, sharp positive-rake carbide, 25–40 % of 316L cutting speeds, heavy feeds to stay under the hardened skin, and flood high-lubricity coolant.
Can Alloy 926 CW-HT be welded?
Yes — weldability is rated good (60/100). GTAW/GMAW/SMAW with over-alloyed Ni-base filler (ERNiCrMo-3/-4, ERNiCrMo-13) to prevent Mo segregation in the weld; no preheat, keep interpass below ~150 °C, low heat input, argon backing, no post-weld heat treatment.

What is the maximum service temperature of Alloy 926 CW-HT?
Alloy 926 CW-HT is rated for continuous use to about 300°C (572 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.
What is the difference between Alloy 926-SA and Alloy 926 CW-HT?
SA is the default condition — standard supply condition for plate, sheet, tube, pipe and fittings — maximum corrosion resistance and ductility; use unless cold-worked strength is needed. CW-HT: springs, screens, wire cloth and fasteners for aggressive chloride media where high strength plus 6Mo corrosion resistance is required. Yield strength is 360 MPa in SA versus 1,000 MPa in CW-HT.
