What is 8Y-FSZ?

8Y-FSZ is a cubic zirconia fully stabilized with about 8 mol% yttria, specified for high oxygen-ion conductivity rather than mechanical toughness. It is used as SOFC electrolyte sheets, oxygen sensor elements and plasma-spray powder for thermal barrier coatings, and is available sintered, tape cast, APS-grade and porous. Density is 5.95 g/cm³, modulus 200 GPa, thermal conductivity 2.2 W/m·K and maximum service temperature 1500 °C. The cubic phase has no transformation toughening, so thin electrolyte sheets are fragile; use 3Y-TZP for structural duty. 8Y-FSZ has a density of 5.95 g/cm³ (0.215 lb/in³), heavier than 64% of ceramic grades. It melts at 2,700°C (4,892 °F). 8Y-FSZ has a tensile strength of 150 MPa (21.8 ksi), stronger than 55% of ceramic grades. Elongation at break is 0% and the elastic modulus is 200 GPa (29 Msi).

What is 8Y-FSZ used for?

Working with 8Y-FSZ

Is 8Y-FSZ easy to machine?

Green/bisque machining is the economic route; after sintering only diamond grinding, lapping and laser/ultrasonic cutting work, and thin electrolyte sheets chip easily at edges.

Can 8Y-FSZ be welded?

Not weldable; join by active-metal brazing (Ag-Cu-Ti), glass-ceramic seals (typical for SOFC stacks) or ceramic adhesives.

Can 8Y-FSZ be formed, bent or molded?

Uniaxial/isostatic pressing, tape casting, slip casting, extrusion or screen printing of spray-dried granulate; sinter 1350–1600 °C in air with ~20 % linear shrinkage.
