Working with 7093-F

Is 7093 easy to machine?

Machines cleanly in T6 with sharp carbide, high speed and flood coolant; chips are short, but the hard Zr/Zn microstructure abrades tooling faster than 7075 and thin walls spring back at high cutting loads.

Can 7093 be welded?

Not recommended for fusion welding (hot cracking, drastic HAZ softening and SCC); join by adhesive bonding, mechanical fasteners or friction stir with post-weld heat treatment.

Can 7093 be formed, bent or molded?

Form only in F or freshly solution-treated (W) condition; T6/T73 stock has very limited cold formability — use generous bend radii or hot forming above 300 °C followed by re-heat-treatment.

What surface finishes work on 7093?

Takes sulfuric and hard anodizing well (slightly darker tone from Zn/Cu), chromate/trivalent conversion coating and paint; shot-peen highly loaded surfaces and avoid peak-aged T6 in bare chloride service.

7093-F — frequently asked

What is 7093-F used for?

7093-F is typically used for golf club heads, high-performance sporting equipment and aerospace fittings. In short: ultra-high-strength 7000-series grade; above 7075 strength; specialty availability only.

What is the yield strength of 7093-F?

7093-F has a typical yield strength of 290 MPa (42.1 ksi) and a tensile strength of 400 MPa (58 ksi) — stronger than 74% of aluminum grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 5 listed tempers.

Is 7093-F easy to machine?

Reasonably — machinability is rated good (55/100, worse than 59% of aluminum grades). Machines cleanly in T6 with sharp carbide, high speed and flood coolant; chips are short, but the hard Zr/Zn microstructure abrades tooling faster than 7075 and thin walls spring back at high cutting loads.

Can 7093-F be welded?

Not readily — weldability is rated poor (15/100). Not recommended for fusion welding (hot cracking, drastic HAZ softening and SCC); join by adhesive bonding, mechanical fasteners or friction stir with post-weld heat treatment.

What surface finishes work on 7093-F?

Takes sulfuric and hard anodizing well (slightly darker tone from Zn/Cu), chromate/trivalent conversion coating and paint; shot-peen highly loaded surfaces and avoid peak-aged T6 in bare chloride service.

Can 7093-F be formed, bent or molded?

Form only in F or freshly solution-treated (W) condition; T6/T73 stock has very limited cold formability — use generous bend radii or hot forming above 300 °C followed by re-heat-treatment.

What is the maximum service temperature of 7093-F?

7093-F is rated for continuous use to about 150°C (302 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between 7093-T6 and 7093-F?

T6 is the default condition — default condition: maximum strength for sporting-goods and high-performance structural parts where chloride exposure is limited. F: semi-finished billet/extrusion stock bought for subsequent solution treatment and aging; no guaranteed mechanical properties. Yield strength is 648 MPa in T6 versus 290 MPa in F.
