What is UMS40?

UMS40 is a Toho Tenax (Teijin) ultra-high-modulus PAN carbon fiber supplied as F22-sized 12K and 24K tow, UD prepreg at 60 % fiber volume and fabric prepreg at 55 %. It is used in stiffness-critical aerospace and satellite laminates, combining 395 GPa modulus with 4560 MPa tensile strength at 1.79 g/cm3. The 1.15 % elongation limits bend radii, drape and impact tolerance, cost is well above standard-modulus fiber, and joints must be bonded, co-cured or bolted rather than welded. HTS40 is the cheaper standard-modulus option; P100 is the higher-modulus pitch-based alternative. UMS40 has a density of 1.79 g/cm³ (0.0647 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of composite grades. UMS40 has a tensile strength of 4,560 MPa (661 ksi), stronger than 94% of composite grades. Elongation at break is 1.2% and the elastic modulus is 395 GPa (57.3 Msi).

Chemical & Environmental3

Corrosion resistance is excellent (90/100), better than 85% of composite grades. UV resistance is excellent.

Chemical Resistance SummaryFiber itself is inert to most acids, alkalis, solvents and fuels; attacked only by hot strong oxidizers (conc. HNO3, chromic acid) and oxidizes in air above ~400 °C. In service the epoxy/BMI matrix and the fiber–matrix interface, not the fiber, set the chemical and moisture limits.

Sustainability4

Working with UMS40

Is UMS40 easy to machine?

Cured laminates cut with PCD/diamond-coated or diamond-grit tooling at high speed and low feed; use up-cut/down-cut compression routers and backing to avoid delamination, and capture the conductive dust.

Can UMS40 be welded?

Not weldable — joints are made by co-curing, structural film/paste adhesive bonding or bolted metallic fittings (isolate from Al/steel with glass ply to avoid galvanic corrosion).

Can UMS40 be formed, bent or molded?

Processed as UD/woven prepreg (autoclave 120–180 °C cure), filament winding, AFP or RTM; the low strain-to-failure and high modulus mean generous fibre radii, careful tow tension and low-friction tooling paths.

What surface finishes work on UMS40?

Peel-ply or resin-rich surface plies then sand/fill/prime; UV-resistant topcoat or paint is required since the epoxy matrix chalks, and edges should be sealed against moisture ingress.

How much does UMS40 cost?

UMS40 is a high-cost composite ($$$$), pricier than about 78% of the materials FabDigit quotes. Part price depends far more on geometry, tolerance and quantity than on the raw stock — upload a CAD file for a live quote.
