What is YG8?
YG8 (C1) is a straight WC–8% Co cemented carbide at the tough end of the YG (ISO K) series, with 600 GPa elastic modulus and 75 W/m·K thermal conductivity, supplied in MG, C and N conditions. The higher cobalt content trades hardness for impact resistance, so it is used for roughing cast iron and non-ferrous metals, mining and rock tools, stamping dies and general wear parts. Service temperature is limited to about 600 °C, corrosion resistance is the lowest in this group because of the larger cobalt binder fraction, and sintered parts can only be diamond ground or EDM'd. Use YG6 when edge wear rather than chipping controls tool life. YG8 has a density of 14.7 g/cm³ (0.531 lb/in³), heavier than 93% of ceramic grades. It melts at 1,320°C (2,408 °F). YG8 has a tensile strength of 1,200 MPa (174 ksi), stronger than 94% of ceramic grades. Elongation at break is 0.1% and the elastic modulus is 600 GPa (87 Msi).
What is YG8 used for?
- roughing cast iron
- mining/rock tools
- stamping dies
- wear liners
Advantages
- Tough — resists crack growth — 14 MPa·√m (12.7 ksi·√in), better than 96% of ceramic grades
- Stiff — 600 GPa (87 Msi), better than 91% of ceramic grades
- Polishes to a fine finish — 90/100, better than 78% of ceramic grades
Limitations
- Heavy — 14.7 g/cm³ (0.531 lb/in³), worse than 93% of ceramic grades
- Needs corrosion protection — 45/100, worse than 90% of ceramic grades

Working with YG8
Is YG8 easy to machine?
Only diamond grinding, wire/sinker EDM (it is electrically conductive) or laser; green-state pressed blanks can be soft-machined before sintering.
Can YG8 be welded?
Not fusion weldable — join by vacuum/induction brazing with Ag-Cu-Zn or Cu-Mn fillers, using a ductile shim to absorb the CTE mismatch with steel.
Can YG8 be formed, bent or molded?
Made by pressing or extruding WC+Co powder and liquid-phase sinter-HIP at ~1400–1450 °C; allow ~18–20 % linear shrinkage and never plastically form the sintered part.

YG8 — frequently asked
What is YG8 used for?
YG8 is typically used for roughing cast iron, mining/rock tools, stamping dies and wear liners. In short: toughest straight WC-Co grade; roughing and impact duty; lower hardness than YG6.
What is the tensile strength of YG8?
YG8 has a typical tensile strength of 1,200 MPa (174 ksi) — stronger than 94% of ceramic grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 3 listed tempers.
Is YG8 easy to machine?
Not especially — machinability is rated not recommended (5/100, worse than 59% of ceramic grades). Only diamond grinding, wire/sinker EDM (it is electrically conductive) or laser; green-state pressed blanks can be soft-machined before sintering.
Can YG8 be welded?
