What is YT30?

YT30 is a high-TiC WC-TiC-Co cemented carbide, the hardest and least tough member of the YT steel-cutting series. It is chosen for precision finishing of steel at high cutting speed and low feed, where dimensional stability and edge sharpness matter more than impact strength; forms are sintered inserts, brazed tips and blanks in SINT, HIP and coated conditions. Density is 9.5 g/cm3, elastic modulus 400 GPa, thermal conductivity 21 W/m·K and service temperature up to 1000 °C. Low toughness rules out interrupted cuts, heavy feeds and unstable setups; step down to YT15 when the cut is not continuous. YT30 has a density of 9.5 g/cm³ (0.343 lb/in³), heavier than 77% of ceramic grades. The elastic modulus is 400 GPa (58 Msi).

What is YT30 used for?

  • precision steel finishing
  • high-speed light-cut turning
  • fine boring

Advantages

  • Polishes to a fine finish — 90/100, better than 78% of ceramic grades
  • Tough — resists crack growth — 7 MPa·√m (6.37 ksi·√in), better than 75% of ceramic grades

Limitations

  • High embodied carbon — 28 kg CO₂/kg, worse than 84% of ceramic grades
  • Heavy — 9.5 g/cm³ (0.343 lb/in³), worse than 77% of ceramic grades

Working with YT30

Is YT30 easy to machine?

Not machinable by conventional tools — shaped by diamond grinding, wire/sinker EDM or green machining before sintering.

Can YT30 be welded?

Not fusion weldable; attached by silver/copper brazing (Ag-Cu-Zn or Cu-Mn with Ni-plated interlayer), keeping heating and cooling slow to avoid cracks.

Can YT30 be formed, bent or molded?

Made by powder pressing (uniaxial or CIP) or extrusion of WC-TiC-Co powder, then vacuum/sinter-HIP densification at ~1450–1500 °C with ~18–22 % linear shrinkage.
