Working with 6105-O

Is 6105 easy to machine?

Machines like 6061-T6 with sharp polished-flute carbide tools, high speed and flood or MQL lubrication; T1/O tempers gum up and give stringy chips.

Can 6105 be welded?

Readily GMAW/GTAW welded with 4043 (general) or 5356 (higher strength/anodizing match); expect HAZ strength to fall toward T4-level unless re-aged.

Can 6105 be formed, bent or molded?

Extrudes well at moderate press speeds; bend and punch in T1 and age to T5/T6 afterwards, since T5 profiles need generous bend radii (≥3t).

What surface finishes work on 6105?

Takes clear and colour anodize uniformly and accepts chromate/chrome-free conversion coats and powder coat; mechanical polishing gives a good but not mirror finish because of Mg2Si/Si particles.

6105-O — frequently asked

What is 6105-O used for?

6105-O is typically used for architectural extrusions, railings, structural sections and ladders. In short: stronger than 6063; good anodizing response; general structural extrusion alloy.

What is the yield strength of 6105-O?

6105-O has a typical yield strength of 55 MPa (7.98 ksi) and a tensile strength of 110 MPa (16 ksi) — weaker than 94% of aluminum grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 5 listed tempers.

Is 6105-O easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated poor (30/100, worse than 92% of aluminum grades). Machines like 6061-T6 with sharp polished-flute carbide tools, high speed and flood or MQL lubrication; T1/O tempers gum up and give stringy chips.

Can 6105-O be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated very good (75/100). Readily GMAW/GTAW welded with 4043 (general) or 5356 (higher strength/anodizing match); expect HAZ strength to fall toward T4-level unless re-aged.

What surface finishes work on 6105-O?

Takes clear and colour anodize uniformly and accepts chromate/chrome-free conversion coats and powder coat; mechanical polishing gives a good but not mirror finish because of Mg2Si/Si particles.

Can 6105-O be formed, bent or molded?

Extrudes well at moderate press speeds; bend and punch in T1 and age to T5/T6 afterwards, since T5 profiles need generous bend radii (≥3t).

What is the maximum service temperature of 6105-O?

6105-O is rated for continuous use to about 150°C (302 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between 6105-T5 and 6105-O?

T5 is the default condition — standard stocked condition for structural and architectural profiles needing ~240 MPa yield straight off the press line. O: softest condition, used only when profiles must be heavily bent or re-formed before ageing. Yield strength is 241 MPa in T5 versus 55 MPa in O.
