Working with 1.4529-AT

Is 1.4529 easy to machine?

Very gummy and strongly work hardening — use rigid setups, positive-rake carbide/coated inserts, ~25–40 m/min cutting speed, heavy feeds to stay under the hardened layer, and copious high-pressure coolant.

Can 1.4529 be welded?

Weld with overalloyed Ni-base filler (ERNiCrMo-3/625 or ERNiCrMo-4/C-276) to avoid Mo depletion in the dendrite cores; low heat input, interpass <100 °C, no preheat, no PWHT, and pickle/passivate all heat tint.

Can 1.4529 be formed, bent or molded?

Cold forms readily but needs ~50% higher press loads than 304 and generous springback allowance; hot work at 1150–1180 °C followed by mandatory solution anneal and water quench.

What surface finishes work on 1.4529?

Pickling in HNO₃–HF and passivation restore the passive film; can be ground and mirror polished, and electropolishing is common for pharma/high-purity duty.

1.4529-AT — frequently asked

What is 1.4529-AT used for?

1.4529-AT is typically used for flue gas desulfurization, seawater handling equipment, chemical process piping, pulp & paper bleaching plants and offshore heat exchangers. In short: 6Mo chloride-resistant austenitic; beats 316L and 904L; ni-base filler required.

What is the yield strength of 1.4529-AT?

1.4529-AT has a typical yield strength of 350 MPa (50.8 ksi) and a tensile strength of 700 MPa (102 ksi) — weaker than 52% of stainless steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 5 listed tempers.

Is 1.4529-AT easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated poor (25/100, worse than 88% of stainless steel grades). Very gummy and strongly work hardening — use rigid setups, positive-rake carbide/coated inserts, ~25–40 m/min cutting speed, heavy feeds to stay under the hardened layer, and copious high-pressure coolant.

Can 1.4529-AT be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated very good (78/100).

Can 1.4529-AT be formed, bent or molded?

Cold forms readily but needs ~50% higher press loads than 304 and generous springback allowance; hot work at 1150–1180 °C followed by mandatory solution anneal and water quench.

What is the maximum service temperature of 1.4529-AT?

1.4529-AT is rated for continuous use to about 400°C (752 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between 1.4529-AT and 1.4529-FH?

AT is the default condition — standard supply condition for plate, sheet, tube, forgings and bar — maximum corrosion resistance and ductility. FH: maximum strength condition for wire, springs and screens; very limited formability and reduced crevice-corrosion margin at cut edges. Yield strength is 350 MPa in AT versus 1,000 MPa in FH.
