What is Pt99.95?
Pt99.95 is commercially pure refined platinum (B561, UNS P00010) supplied as annealed, H02, H04, H08 and mill-hard (F) product plus sponge. It is used as laboratory ware, standard weights and electrode stock, and as the parent metal for Pt-Ir and Pt-Rh alloys, because it combines 1500 °C service capability, 71.6 W/m·K thermal conductivity, 16.3% IACS conductivity and near-ideal formability (formability score 98). Annealed properties are low — 140 MPa tensile, 45 MPa yield, 40% elongation, 39 HB — so parts rely on section thickness rather than strength, and machinability is poor (score 25). Cost and contamination sensitivity, not corrosion, set the practical limits. Pt99.95 has a density of 21.45 g/cm³ (0.775 lb/in³), heavier than 97% of precious metal grades. It melts at 1,768°C (3,214 °F). Pt99.95 has a yield strength of 45 MPa (6.53 ksi) and a tensile strength of 140 MPa (20.3 ksi) — weaker than 98% of precious metal grades. Elongation at break is 40% and the elastic modulus is 168 GPa (24.4 Msi).

Working with Pt99.95
Is Pt99.95 easy to machine?
Very gummy and smearing — use sharp uncoated carbide or HSS with high positive rake, light depth, high speed and copious lubricant; collect all swarf and coolant for refining.
Can Pt99.95 be welded?
Autogenous TIG, plasma, laser or oxy-hydrogen welding gives full-strength joints without filler; keep the flame oxidising and the work free of Pb/Si/S contamination to avoid grain-boundary embrittlement.
Can Pt99.95 be formed, bent or molded?
Outstanding cold formability — deep draws, spins into crucibles and rolls to sub-10 µm foil; anneal at 900–1000 °C between heavy reductions and avoid contact with steel dies that can transfer iron.
