What is Pt95Rh5 gauze?
Pt95Rh5 gauze is platinum alloyed with 5 % rhodium, drawn to fine wire and woven or knitted into catalyst gauze, often packed together with palladium gauze. It is the industrial catalyst for ammonia oxidation in nitric acid production and for HCN synthesis by the Andrussow process, supplied as woven or knitted gauze, sheet and wire in annealed through H04 tempers. Mechanical values are 420 MPa tensile, 220 MPa yield and 20 % elongation, with a rated maximum service temperature of 950 °C. It is effectively not a machined material (machinability 20), cost tracks the platinum-group metal market, and spent gauze is returned for refining. Pt95Rh5 gauze has a density of 20.65 g/cm³ (0.746 lb/in³), heavier than 95% of precious metal grades. It melts at 1,785°C (3,245 °F). Pt95Rh5 gauze has a yield strength of 220 MPa (31.9 ksi) and a tensile strength of 420 MPa (60.9 ksi) — stronger than 67% of precious metal grades. Elongation at break is 20% and the elastic modulus is 180 GPa (26.1 Msi).

Working with Pt95Rh5 gauze
Is Pt95Rh5 gauze easy to machine?
Rarely machined; if required use sharp, high-rake carbide or diamond tools, light cuts and flood coolant to avoid smearing, and capture every chip and swarf for refining.
Can Pt95Rh5 gauze be welded?
Excellent — resistance spot, micro-TIG and laser welding are standard for edging gauze packs and joining wires; weld clean, oxide-free and away from base-metal contamination.
Can Pt95Rh5 gauze be formed, bent or molded?
Drawn to <0.06 mm wire and woven/knitted on precision looms; interanneal at 900–1100 °C in clean air or hydrogen-free atmosphere and avoid contact with graphite, Si, P or Pb-bearing tooling.
