What is Pt95Ir5?
Pt95Ir5 is platinum with 5 % iridium in solid solution, covered by ASTM B562 and stocked annealed, H01, H02, H04, spring and as-cast. It gives a balance of workability and hardness for parts where slightly softer material than Pt90Ir10 is preferred, and is used as precision wire, sheet, coined parts and crucibles. Annealed values are 125 MPa yield, 250 MPa tensile, 32 % elongation, 76 HB, 43 W/m·K, 9.1 % IACS and about 1000 °C maximum service temperature. Machinability is low (28) and cost follows the PGM market; step up to Pt90Ir10 for higher hardness and a 1200 °C ceiling. Pt95Ir5 has a density of 21.5 g/cm³ (0.777 lb/in³), heavier than 98% of precious metal grades. It melts at 1,779°C (3,234 °F). Pt95Ir5 has a yield strength of 125 MPa (18.1 ksi) and a tensile strength of 250 MPa (36.3 ksi) — weaker than 74% of precious metal grades. Elongation at break is 32% and the elastic modulus is 175 GPa (25.4 Msi).

Working with Pt95Ir5
Is Pt95Ir5 easy to machine?
Soft and gummy — use sharp uncoated carbide or HSS, positive rake, high speed, light continuous feed and flood lubrication; collect all chips and swarf for refining credit.
Can Pt95Ir5 be welded?
Excellent for laser, micro-TIG, resistance and pulse-arc welding in clean/inert conditions; avoid contact with silicon, lead, sulfur or reducing flames that embrittle PGMs.
Can Pt95Ir5 be formed, bent or molded?
Annealed material cold-works readily by drawing, rolling, deep drawing and coining; interanneal at 900–1100 °C in air or clean inert gas after ~50–70 % reduction.
