What is Pt95Ru5?
Pt95Ru5 is a 950-fine platinum alloy solid-solution hardened with 5 % ruthenium, supplied under the B563 designation family. It reaches 124 HB and 380 MPa tensile with 175 MPa yield and 34 % elongation annealed, at lower alloying cost than iridium-hardened platinum, and is stocked as sheet, wire, tube and castings in annealed, 1/4H, 1/2H, H, spring and as-cast conditions. The limits are low electrical conductivity (5.6 % IACS), poor machinability (score 30) and precious-metal cost. Pt95Co5 is the nearest alternative when castability matters more than work-hardening response. Pt95Ru5 has a density of 20.67 g/cm³ (0.747 lb/in³), heavier than 95% of precious metal grades. It melts at 1,780°C (3,236 °F). Pt95Ru5 has a yield strength of 175 MPa (25.4 ksi) and a tensile strength of 380 MPa (55.1 ksi) — weaker than 62% of precious metal grades. Elongation at break is 34% and the elastic modulus is 186 GPa (27 Msi).

Working with Pt95Ru5
Is Pt95Ru5 easy to machine?
Soft and gummy when annealed — machine in 1/2-hard or harder temper with sharp, high-rake carbide or HSS tools, light feeds, generous coolant, and capture all swarf for refining.
Can Pt95Ru5 be welded?
Excellent for resistance, laser and micro-TIG welding without filler in clean argon; avoid contamination by Fe, Si, P, S and carbon which cause hot shortness.
Can Pt95Ru5 be formed, bent or molded?
Very ductile when annealed: deep draws, rolls to foil and draws to fine wire; interanneal at 900–1000 °C in air or argon after ~50–60 % reduction.
