Working with Nickel 270 Hot Finished
Is Nickel 270 easy to machine?
Very gummy and work-hardening — use sharp positive-rake carbide, heavy positive feed, low-to-moderate speed and copious sulphur-free (chlorinated or synthetic) coolant to avoid built-up edge and smearing.
Can Nickel 270 be welded?
Readily GTAW/EBW/laser welded, usually autogenously or with Ni-filler ERNi-1; keep joints free of sulphur, lead and grease to avoid hot cracking, and avoid heavy oxide pickup that would compromise purity.
Can Nickel 270 be formed, bent or molded?
Excellent cold formability in the annealed condition — deep drawing, spinning, stamping and fine-blanking; interstage anneal at 700–870 °C in dry hydrogen or vacuum after ~60% reduction.
What surface finishes work on Nickel 270?
Electropolishing or bright hydrogen annealing gives the clean, low-outgassing surface required for vacuum/electronic use; nickel is not anodized and generally needs no coating, but sulphur-bearing pickling and marking inks must be avoided.
