What is Mycalex?

Mycalex is a glass-bonded mica composite — mica flakes hot-pressed in a glass matrix — supplied in grades 400, 410 and 1100. It is chosen when an inorganic, high-frequency insulator must be cut to tolerance like a metal: machinability rates 75, and moulded blanks can carry metal terminals inserted during pressing, which suits RF connector insulators and terminal boards. Density is 3.4 g/cm³, tensile strength about 45 MPa and the maximum service temperature 350 °C, so it does not replace Macor or alumina in hotter service; it is brittle and cannot be welded. Mycalex has a density of 3.4 g/cm³ (0.123 lb/in³), heavier than 64% of glass grades. Mycalex has a tensile strength of 45 MPa (6.53 ksi), weaker than 56% of glass grades. Elongation at break is 0.1% and the elastic modulus is 65 GPa (9.43 Msi).

What is Mycalex used for?

  • RF connector insulators
  • vacuum tube components
  • terminal boards
  • high-voltage insulators

Working with Mycalex

Is Mycalex easy to machine?

Turn, mill, drill and tap directly with carbide or diamond tooling, cutting dry with good chip evacuation. The material is brittle, so use light feeds and full backing support to prevent exit chipping.

Can Mycalex be welded?

Not weldable; assemble with threaded inserts, mechanical clamping or high-temperature inorganic or epoxy adhesive. Metal parts can be embedded during moulding.

Can Mycalex be formed, bent or molded?

Mica powder and glass powder are hot-pressed or compression-moulded to near-net shape at about 600–800 °C; moulded parts show almost no shrinkage and metal terminals can be moulded in place.

What surface finishes work on Mycalex?

Grinding and light polishing are possible, but exposed mica flakes limit the achievable gloss. Surfaces can be cleaned and metallized with fired silver for electrodes; the substrate cannot be anodized or plated.
