What is Ceran?

Ceran is a lithium-aluminosilicate glass-ceramic panel, rolled in the glassy state and then ceramized, available in black and transparent versions (Black, HIGHTRANS, TRANS, MIRADUR). It is specified where a flat panel must survive thermal shock and continuous service to 700 °C with very low expansion, as in cooktops and stove or fireplace windows. Thermal conductivity is 1.6 W/m·K, so the panel insulates rather than spreads heat. Parts are made to size by diamond grinding and waterjet (machinability rating 12), and strength depends on edge quality since no reshaping is possible after crystallization. Ceran has a density of 2.55 g/cm³ (0.0921 lb/in³), lighter than 64% of glass grades. Ceran has a tensile strength of 30 MPa (4.35 ksi), weaker than 80% of glass grades. The elastic modulus is 92 GPa (13.3 Msi).

What is Ceran used for?

  • Cooktop panels
  • Wood stove viewing windows
  • Fireplace inserts

Chemical & Environmental2

Corrosion resistance is excellent (92/100), better than 81% of glass grades.

Corrosion ResistanceExcellent92/100
Chemical Resistance SummaryExcellent against water, food acids, alkaline cleaners, oils and most solvents; attacked by hydrofluoric acid and hot concentrated phosphoric acid/strong alkali melts; prolonged contact with spilled sugar or aluminium at cooking temperature can locally etch or metal-mark the surface.

Sustainability4

Producing a kilogram of Ceran takes about 30 MJ of energy and emits 2 kg of CO₂ — less than 79% of glass grades. Typical recycled content is 10%.

Working with Ceran

Is Ceran easy to machine?

Diamond grinding, core drilling and waterjet only — never conventional cutting; edges must be ground and seamed to remove flaws that dominate strength.

Can Ceran be welded?

Cannot be welded; joined by silicone/RTV gaskets, mechanical frames or glass-solder sealing to matched near-zero-CTE parts.

Can Ceran be formed, bent or molded?

Shaped in the glassy state by rolling/pressing (flat, beaded or downward-flanged panels) and then ceramized on a roller hearth; no reshaping after crystallization.

What surface finishes work on Ceran?

Fire-polished as-rolled surface, decorated by high-temperature ceramic screen-printing inks, optional hard scratch-resistant or anti-fingerprint coatings; no plating or anodizing.

How much does Ceran cost?

Ceran is a high-cost glass ($$$$), pricier than about 78% of the materials FabDigit quotes. Part price depends far more on geometry, tolerance and quantity than on the raw stock — upload a CAD file for a live quote.
