What is Neoceram?

Neoceram is a low-expansion lithium-aluminosilicate glass-ceramic (grades N-0 and N-11) produced by crystallizing a shaped glass precursor, in the same class as Ceran and Robax panels. It is chosen for flat panels that see repeated thermal cycling and local heating, with a 700 °C maximum service temperature and 1.65 W/m·K thermal conductivity, and is normally supplied as rolled and ceramized sheet cut to size. All geometry must be set before ceramming; afterwards only diamond grinding applies, and the material cannot be welded or cold-formed. Macor is the alternative when a machinable glass-ceramic is required. Neoceram has a density of 2.51 g/cm³ (0.0907 lb/in³), lighter than 70% of glass grades. It melts at 1,400°C (2,552 °F). Neoceram has a tensile strength of 50 MPa (7.25 ksi), stronger than 59% of glass grades. Elongation at break is 0% and the elastic modulus is 88 GPa (12.8 Msi).

Working with Neoceram

Is Neoceram easy to machine?

Grind, drill and edge only with diamond tooling and copious water; waterjet works but needs low pierce pressure — no conventional cutting or scoring after ceramming.

Can Neoceram be welded?

Not weldable; joined mechanically with gaskets/clips or by high-temperature silicone, glass frit or metal-to-glass sealing.

Can Neoceram be formed, bent or molded?

Shaped as a green (vitreous) precursor by rolling, pressing or slumping, then crystallized at ~800–950 °C; no post-ceramming forming is possible.
