What is Nomex?
Nomex is a meta-aramid used for flame and electrical resistance rather than stiffness, with density 1.1 g/cm³, tensile strength 90 MPa, elongation 12 % and service to about 220 °C. It is supplied as type 410, 411 and 418 insulation paper, PB993 pressboard, staple fiber, woven fabric, honeycomb core in 48, 29 and 144 kg/m³ classes and phenolic-impregnated laminate. Engineers use it for sandwich cores, thermal-protective clothing and Class H electrical insulation; machinability rates 50 for paper and core. It has no melting point and is hygroscopic, so drying before bonding or varnishing is required; para-aramids such as Kevlar are the choice when structural strength is needed. Nomex has a density of 1.1 g/cm³ (0.0397 lb/in³), lighter than 81% of composite grades. Its glass-transition temperature is 275°C (527 °F). Nomex has a tensile strength of 90 MPa (13.1 ksi), weaker than 72% of composite grades. Elongation at break is 12% and the elastic modulus is 2.5 GPa (0.363 Msi).

Working with Nomex
Is Nomex easy to machine?
Paper and pressboard die-cut, laser or waterjet cut cleanly; honeycomb core needs razor/serrated blades, high-speed router with sharp carbide or waterjet plus vacuum fixturing to avoid cell crush and fuzzing.
Can Nomex be welded?
Not weldable or heat-sealable (no melting point) — join by adhesive bonding, resin impregnation, stitching or mechanical clamping.
Can Nomex be formed, bent or molded?
Paper and honeycomb are cold-formable/creped to gentle curvature; core is expanded from an HOBE block and phenolic-dipped, and sandwich panels are co-cured or bonded with 120–180 °C film adhesive.

What surface finishes work on Nomex?
Dry the material before bonding or varnish impregnation (hygroscopic); surfaces accept phenolic/epoxy varnish, corona or plasma treatment improves adhesion; no plating or polishing applies.
How much does Nomex cost?
Nomex is a high-cost composite ($$$$), pricier than about 78% of the materials FabDigit quotes. Part price depends far more on geometry, tolerance and quantity than on the raw stock — upload a CAD file for a live quote.
