What is 6061/SiC/10p?

6061/SiC/10p (Duralcan F3S.10S) is a general-purpose aluminium metal-matrix composite: a 6061 matrix with 10 vol% silicon carbide particulate, available in O, F, T4, T6 and T651 tempers plus cast T61. The 10 % loading lifts elastic modulus to 81 GPa and improves wear resistance over unreinforced 6061 while retaining 6 % elongation, 338 MPa tensile strength, 296 MPa yield and 175 W/m·K conductivity. Machinability remains workable for an MMC (score 30) but diamond tooling is still needed, and service is limited to about 175 °C; step up to 2124/SiC/25p for higher strength and stiffness. 6061/SiC/10p has a density of 2.75 g/cm³ (0.0994 lb/in³), heavier than 87% of composite grades. 6061/SiC/10p has a yield strength of 296 MPa (42.9 ksi) and a tensile strength of 338 MPa (49 ksi) — weaker than 53% of composite grades. Elongation at break is 6% and the elastic modulus is 81 GPa (11.7 Msi).

Working with 6061/SiC/10p

Is 6061/SiC/10p easy to machine?

Use PCD or CVD-diamond tooling with high speed and light feed — carbide edges wear in minutes; grinding, EDM and waterjet all work well.

Can 6061/SiC/10p be welded?

Fusion welding is risky (Al4C3 formation, particle segregation); prefer friction stir welding, brazing or mechanical fastening, with 4043/4047 filler if GTAW is unavoidable.

Can 6061/SiC/10p be formed, bent or molded?

Extrudes and forges hot (400–500 °C) at lower reduction rates than 6061; cold formability is limited by the reduced ductility, so bend in O or T4 temper with generous radii.

What surface finishes work on 6061/SiC/10p?

Anodizes to a slightly grey, less uniform film because SiC particles do not oxidise; chemical conversion coating, painting and electroless nickel are all viable alternatives.
