What is T5K10?
Т5К10 is a GOST WC–TiC–Co cutting grade with about 5% TiC in a 10% cobalt binder, the CIS equivalent of YT5 and of C5-class steel-cutting carbide. It is used for roughing and heavy interrupted cuts on steel, where the TiC addition resists crater wear while the high cobalt content keeps the edge from chipping; typical forms are brazed tips, pressed inserts and blanks, with HIP and CVD-coated conditions available. Density is 12.7 g/cm³ and elastic modulus 540 GPa, but thermal conductivity is only 21 W/m·K and service temperature tops out near 800 °C. It is brittle and not fusion weldable; Т15К6 is the finishing-side alternative. T5K10 has a density of 12.7 g/cm³ (0.459 lb/in³), heavier than 83% of ceramic grades. It melts at 1,370°C (2,498 °F). T5K10 has a tensile strength of 900 MPa (131 ksi), stronger than 83% of ceramic grades. The elastic modulus is 540 GPa (78.3 Msi).
What is T5K10 used for?
- Steel roughing turning inserts
- Brazed lathe tools for heavy interrupted cuts
- Planing and shaping tool tips
- Face milling inserts for forgings
- Machining of steel castings with scale
- Boring bar tips for rough passes
Advantages
- Tough — resists crack growth — 11 MPa·√m (10 ksi·√in), better than 91% of ceramic grades
- Stiff — 540 GPa (78.3 Msi), better than 86% of ceramic grades
Limitations
- High embodied carbon — 30 kg CO₂/kg, worse than 91% of ceramic grades
- Heavy — 12.7 g/cm³ (0.459 lb/in³), worse than 83% of ceramic grades
- Needs corrosion protection — 50/100, worse than 83% of ceramic grades

Working with T5K10
Is T5K10 easy to machine?
After sintering it can only be shaped by diamond wheel grinding, EDM or laser cutting; conventional cutting is not possible.
Can T5K10 be welded?
Not fusion weldable; braze to steel shanks with silver-based Ag-Cu-Zn filler (BAg types) at 700–900 °C in vacuum or with a torch, then cool slowly to avoid braze cracking.
Can T5K10 be formed, bent or molded?
Powder-metallurgy pressing or extrusion followed by vacuum or low-pressure sintering at about 1400–1500 °C; sintering shrinkage is roughly 18–20% and no secondary plastic forming is possible.
T5K10 chemical composition (wt %)
Limits by weight percent from the governing specification, written the way the spec states them — a single maximum for impurities, a range for alloying elements, and the base element as balance. Nominal is the typical mid-range value.
| Element | Spec limit (wt %) | Nominal |
|---|---|---|
| TiCtitanium carbide, raises red hardness and crater wear resistance | 4 – 6 | 5 |
| Cocobalt binder phase | 9 – 11 | 10 |
| WCtungsten carbide matrix, grain size about 1.5–3 µm | balance | — |
What surface finishes work on T5K10?
Diamond grinding and lapping reaches Ra 0.05 µm; CVD/PVD coatings (TiN, TiCN, Al₂O₃) raise wear resistance, and electroplating is not suitable.
