What is T15K6?
Т15К6 is the classic GOST WC–TiC–Co steel-cutting grade with about 15% TiC and 6% cobalt, equivalent to YT15. The high TiC content gives hot hardness and crater-wear resistance for finishing and semi-finishing turning of steel, and it is supplied as brazed tips, blanks and pressed inserts in sintered, HIP and CVD-coated conditions. Thermal conductivity is 27 W/m·K and service temperature reaches about 850 °C, but the low binder content makes it more chip-sensitive than Т5К10 under interrupted cuts, and it is unsuitable for cast iron or non-ferrous work. T15K6 has a density of 11.4 g/cm³ (0.412 lb/in³), heavier than 81% of ceramic grades. It melts at 1,350°C (2,462 °F). T15K6 has a tensile strength of 800 MPa (116 ksi), stronger than 79% of ceramic grades. Elongation at break is 0.1% and the elastic modulus is 520 GPa (75.4 Msi).
What is T15K6 used for?
- Steel finishing and semi-finishing turning inserts
- General lathe tooling for carbon and alloy steel
- Brazed-tip boring tools
- Threading and grooving tool tips
- Face and shoulder milling inserts for light cuts
- Form tools for steel components
Advantages
- Tough — resists crack growth — 9.5 MPa·√m (8.65 ksi·√in), better than 84% of ceramic grades
- Stiff — 520 GPa (75.4 Msi), better than 81% of ceramic grades
Limitations
- Heavy — 11.4 g/cm³ (0.412 lb/in³), worse than 81% of ceramic grades
- Needs corrosion protection — 55/100, worse than 77% of ceramic grades

Working with T15K6
Is T15K6 easy to machine?
Once sintered it can only be worked by diamond wheel grinding, EDM or laser machining; green blanks can be pre-formed with carbide or HSS tooling before final sintering.
Can T15K6 be welded?
Not fusion weldable; braze onto steel shanks with copper- or silver-based fillers (BAg series) by vacuum or induction brazing and cool slowly to prevent thermal cracking.
Can T15K6 be formed, bent or molded?
Powder pressing (die, isostatic or extrusion) followed by liquid-phase sintering at 1420–1540 °C; shrinkage is about 18–22%, so tooling must be oversized accordingly.
T15K6 chemical composition (wt %)
Limits by weight percent from the governing specification, written the way the spec states them — a single maximum for impurities, a range for alloying elements, and the base element as balance. Nominal is the typical mid-range value.
| Element | Spec limit (wt %) | Nominal |
|---|---|---|
| TiCtitanium carbide as (Ti,W)C with some WC in solid solution | 14 – 16 | 15 |
| Cocobalt binder phase | 5.5 – 6.5 | 6 |
| WCbalance, tungsten carbide | balance | — |
What surface finishes work on T15K6?
Diamond grinding plus lapping and polishing produces mirror cutting edges; CVD/PVD coatings or edge honing extend tool life.
