What is 8009?
8009 is a rapidly solidified, dispersion-strengthened aluminum alloy containing iron, vanadium and silicon, in which fine Al12(Fe,V)3Si particles hold strength at temperature; it is supplied in the as-consolidated F condition as extrusion, sheet, forging or HIP product. Engineers use it where aluminum must work far above conventional limits: 385 MPa yield, 415 MPa tensile, 12% elongation and 120 HB, with a service temperature up to 315 °C. It cannot be fusion welded without losing that elevated-temperature strength, cold formability is poor, machinability is abrasive (score 40) and availability is limited to specialty aerospace supply. 8009 has a density of 2.94 g/cm³ (0.106 lb/in³), heavier than 99% of aluminum grades. It melts at 645°C (1,193 °F). 8009 has a yield strength of 385 MPa (55.8 ksi) and a tensile strength of 415 MPa (60.2 ksi) — stronger than 87% of aluminum grades. Elongation at break is 12% and the elastic modulus is 88 GPa (12.8 Msi).

Working with 8009
Is 8009 easy to machine?
Machine like a high-silicon Al: PCD or fine-grain uncoated carbide, high speed, light feed and flood coolant — the Al12(Fe,V)3Si particles wear HSS quickly.
Can 8009 be welded?
Avoid fusion welding (dispersoid coarsening kills elevated-temperature strength); use friction/inertia welding, FSW, diffusion bonding or mechanical fastening.
Can 8009 be formed, bent or molded?
Produced only by rapid-solidification powder/ribbon consolidation plus hot extrusion or hot rolling; warm-form sheet at 200–350 °C, cold formability is poor.

What surface finishes work on 8009?
Anodizing gives dark, patchy films; prefer chromate-free conversion coating plus high-temperature primer, or bare use with a thin sol-gel/paint system.

8009 — frequently asked
What is 8009 used for?
8009 is typically used for aerospace elevated-temperature components, turbine engine parts and high-temperature airframe structures. In short: 315 °C service aluminum; dispersion-strengthened, not age-hardened; specialty aerospace availability.
What is the yield strength of 8009?
8009 has a typical yield strength of 385 MPa (55.8 ksi) and a tensile strength of 415 MPa (60.2 ksi) — stronger than 87% of aluminum grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 3 listed tempers.
Is 8009 easy to machine?
Not especially — machinability is rated fair (40/100, worse than 81% of aluminum grades). Machine like a high-silicon Al: PCD or fine-grain uncoated carbide, high speed, light feed and flood coolant — the Al12(Fe,V)3Si particles wear HSS quickly.
Can 8009 be welded?
Not readily — weldability is rated poor (25/100). Avoid fusion welding (dispersoid coarsening kills elevated-temperature strength); use friction/inertia welding, FSW, diffusion bonding or mechanical fastening.
What surface finishes work on 8009?
Anodizing gives dark, patchy films; prefer chromate-free conversion coating plus high-temperature primer, or bare use with a thin sol-gel/paint system.
Can 8009 be formed, bent or molded?

What is the maximum service temperature of 8009?
8009 is rated for continuous use to about 315°C (599 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.
What is the difference between 8009 F-EXT and 8009 F-HIP?
F-EXT is the default condition — standard supplied condition for bar, profile and forging stock; highest longitudinal strength. F-HIP: billet or near-net P/M preform condition; use only where subsequent hot working is not possible, as ductility is lowest. Yield strength is 385 MPa in F-EXT versus 320 MPa in F-HIP.
