Working with 4007-F
Is 4007 easy to machine?
Machines like a soft Al-Mn sheet alloy: use polished high-rake carbide, high speed and flood lubrication to avoid built-up edge; hard tempers chip-break better than O.
Can 4007 be welded?
GTAW/GMAW with 4043 or 4047 filler and resistance/laser welding work well; avoid autogenous fusion of thin cold-worked strip because of hot-cracking and full local softening of the HAZ.
Can 4007 be formed, bent or molded?
Excellent cold formability in O/H111 (deep drawing, fin corrugating, bending to tight radii); H16–H18 tolerate only large-radius bends and should be bent across the rolling direction.
What surface finishes work on 4007?
Prefer chemical conversion coating, chromate-free pretreat plus paint, or brazing-flux compatible surfaces; decorative anodizing gives dark grey mottling because of Si/Mn/Ni intermetallics.

4007-F — frequently asked
What is 4007-F used for?
4007-F is typically used for foil stock, fin stock and thin gauge sheet. In short: stronger than 1000-series foil; high-formability fin alloy; not heat treatable.
What is the yield strength of 4007-F?
4007-F has a typical yield strength of 75 MPa (10.9 ksi) and a tensile strength of 155 MPa (22.5 ksi) — weaker than 91% of aluminum grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 11 listed tempers.
Is 4007-F easy to machine?
Reasonably — machinability is rated fair (50/100, worse than 65% of aluminum grades). Machines like a soft Al-Mn sheet alloy: use polished high-rake carbide, high speed and flood lubrication to avoid built-up edge; hard tempers chip-break better than O.
Can 4007-F be welded?
Yes — weldability is rated good (62/100). GTAW/GMAW with 4043 or 4047 filler and resistance/laser welding work well; avoid autogenous fusion of thin cold-worked strip because of hot-cracking and full local softening of the HAZ.

What is the maximum service temperature of 4007-F?
4007-F is rated for continuous use to about 175°C (347 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.
What is the difference between 4007-O and 4007-H18?
O is the default condition — pick for maximum formability: deep drawing, stretch forming and foil/clad-sheet stock before brazing. H18: maximum cold-worked strength; used for thin strip and foil where forming is limited to slitting and light corrugation. Yield strength is 65 MPa in O versus 230 MPa in H18.
