What is Type 2 Sheet Pewter?

Type 2 Sheet Pewter (ASTM B560 Type 2, UNS L13912) is a wrought tin-antimony-copper alloy at roughly 91–93 % Sn, supplied as sheet and coil in as-fabricated, cold-rolled and annealed conditions. Fabricators choose it for spinning, deep drawing, pressing and hand raising: formability rates 95 and the alloy works at room temperature with almost no springback. Strength is low (43 MPa yield, 68 MPa tensile, 25 HB), elongation is 25 % and service temperature is capped at 90 °C, so it is decorative rather than structural, with a corrosion resistance score of 62. Type 1 casting pewter covers shapes that cannot be raised from sheet. Type 2 Sheet Pewter has a density of 7.28 g/cm³ (0.263 lb/in³), lighter than 97% of solder & low-melting alloy grades. It melts at 244°C (471 °F). Type 2 Sheet Pewter has a yield strength of 43 MPa (6.24 ksi) and a tensile strength of 68 MPa (9.86 ksi) — stronger than 93% of solder & low-melting alloy grades. Elongation at break is 25% and the elastic modulus is 45 GPa (6.53 Msi).

Working with Type 2 Sheet Pewter

Is Type 2 Sheet Pewter easy to machine?

Very soft and gummy — use sharp high-rake HSS tools, high speed, light feeds and generous lubricant to prevent smearing and built-up edge; no heat-treat hardening available.

Can Type 2 Sheet Pewter be welded?

Fusion welding is impractical; joints are made by soft soldering or 'burning in' with pewter filler rod at low torch heat (base metal melts near 245 °C).

Can Type 2 Sheet Pewter be formed, bent or molded?

Outstanding cold formability — spins, deep-draws, presses and hand-raises at room temperature with little springback; interanneal is rarely needed since the alloy recovers near ambient.

Type 2 Sheet Pewter chemical composition (wt %)

Limits by weight percent from the governing specification, written the way the spec states them — a single maximum for impurities, a range for alloying elements, and the base element as balance. Nominal is the typical mid-range value.

What surface finishes work on Type 2 Sheet Pewter?

Buffs to a bright silvery lustre or is brushed/satin-finished; can be chemically darkened (oxidised) for antique effect; not suitable for anodizing and rarely plated.

Type 2 Sheet Pewter — frequently asked

What is Type 2 Sheet Pewter used for?

Type 2 Sheet Pewter is typically used for decorative tableware, ornamental spun hollowware, trophies and giftware and architectural trim. In short: most formable pewter sheet; room-temperature spinning alloy; solders, never welds.

What is the yield strength of Type 2 Sheet Pewter?

Type 2 Sheet Pewter has a typical yield strength of 43 MPa (6.24 ksi) and a tensile strength of 68 MPa (9.86 ksi) — stronger than 93% of solder & low-melting alloy grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 3 listed tempers.

Is Type 2 Sheet Pewter easy to machine?

Reasonably — machinability is rated good (60/100, better than 76% of solder & low-melting alloy grades). Very soft and gummy — use sharp high-rake HSS tools, high speed, light feeds and generous lubricant to prevent smearing and built-up edge; no heat-treat hardening available.

Can Type 2 Sheet Pewter be welded?

Not readily — weldability is rated poor (20/100). Fusion welding is impractical; joints are made by soft soldering or 'burning in' with pewter filler rod at low torch heat (base metal melts near 245 °C).

What surface finishes work on Type 2 Sheet Pewter?

Buffs to a bright silvery lustre or is brushed/satin-finished; can be chemically darkened (oxidised) for antique effect; not suitable for anodizing and rarely plated.

Can Type 2 Sheet Pewter be formed, bent or molded?

Outstanding cold formability — spins, deep-draws, presses and hand-raises at room temperature with little springback; interanneal is rarely needed since the alloy recovers near ambient.

What is the maximum service temperature of Type 2 Sheet Pewter?

Type 2 Sheet Pewter is rated for continuous use to about 90°C (194 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between Type 2 Sheet Pewter-CR and Type 2 Sheet Pewter-F?

CR is the default condition — the normal stocked sheet condition: highest strength and best surface for spinning, stamping and hand-raising of tableware. F: pick when the Type 2 composition is poured into moulds (candlesticks, figurines, tankard parts) rather than rolled. Yield strength is 43 MPa in CR versus 26 MPa in F.
